The B&M Shift Improver Kit can help increase the performance and durability of your stock automatic transmission. By eliminating many restrictive oil flow controls in the transmission's valve body, it allows the transmission to shift more firmly and reduce slippage and shift overlap, providing crisper shifts and reducing wear. Each kit gives you two modes of performance to select from -- RV/heavy duty or street/strip. The heavy duty option provides positive shifts without loss of driver comfort for improved performance, and is designed for regular passenger vehicles. The street/strip option provides positive shifts for high performance street use or for competitive events, and is designed for the enthusiast who wants the hardest, quickest possible shift.

The B&M Shift Improver Kit #40264 : Kit comes with all parts necessary to do a transmission upgrade to quicker, more positive shifts, less heat build-up, and a longer transmission life. You will need a hydraulic jack and a clean, flat surface and 4 jack stands to support the vehicle. You'll need a 1/4-inch electric drill-- and a small jar of Vaseline (to hold small parts in place). I use a Craftsman *clicker* torque wrench (inch/pound type) to be sure of proper torque on all bolts. Over-tightening of the bolts can warp the valve body and ruin the tranny and all your work. B&M suggests that you have 10 quarts of the proper type of trans fluid on hand. I drained the torque converter, too -- so it took 12.5 quarts to bring the level back to "Full". Put the 10 quarts in first, and add the rest after the trans is fully warmed up. Check the fluid level with engine fully warmed up (driven for 10 miles), and DO NOT OVER-FILL !! I spent the extra dough to get Mobil 1 Synthetic Trans Fluid -- Amazon's price was better than the local shops. These transmissions are electronically controlled by the ECM (computer) -- To avoid electrical problems with computer-controlled devices, disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable before work begins! Review the included instructions CAREFULLY before beginning -- the list of required tools is short, but be SURE to have the proper snap-ring pliers on hand !! ALL of the necessary drill bits are included in the kit, but you'll only need the 5/64ths drill bit for the * RV-Heavy Duty * option. Handle ALL parts carefully, being careful to avoid any source of dirt/debris. This entire job CAN be completed in one day -- but I allow an extra few hours to take extra care and avoid being rushed. I had already installed a B&M Drain Plug Kit, so the job of changing the fluid and filter wouldn't be messy. Be careful to SAVE the original (RE-USEABLE) pan gasket -- clean it carefully with WD-40 before re-installing. Some brands of Trans Filters come with a cork gasket, but these things are a nasty mess to install, and even worse to remove at your next filter change!! I recommend using the Motorcraft FT100 Automatic Transmission Filter - it's of premium quality, Made in the USA, and available at Amazon. Re-use the original gasket for best results !! Use diesel fuel to clean all parts -- it's cheap and non-explosive !! I have installed the same and similar B&M Kits in the Ford C-6 and the 4R70W automatic transmissions with excellent results. The Kit comes with complete instructions, but you can print a copy of the instructions (downloaded the PDF from JEGS.com) to study while you're waiting for your kit to arrive -- it'll help you line up the job and to have the necessary stuff on hand before you start work.Good Luck !! Update: Using the *RV-Heavy Duty* option, a Shake-Down cruise on city streets, freeways, and some mountain driving showed impressive improvements over the stock transmission -- shifting was firm and positive, on both the up-shift and the down-shift. The most noticable improvement was in the feel of the trans during mountain driving -- a better feeling of being *connected* to the road. Didn't do before & after timing runs, but the car felt a bit quicker under acceleration. Will need to run several tanks of gas through it before checking for mileage improvements. After several tanks of fuel, there was NO CHANGE in fuel economy.UPDATE: June 15, 2021 --Over FIFTY (50) thousand miles later, the transmission is smooth, quiet, and responsive. Shifts are crisper, but mountain driving is where the shift improver kit really shines ! I have installed the B&M kits in several cars, with excellent results every time -- If you want better performance without sacrificing fuel mileage, this B&M kit has the stuff that gets the job done.
