I am recently physically disabled, and this year for Christmas I decided to treat myself to a few gadgets that make my favorite hobbies (spinning and crocheting yarn) easier. On that list was this ball winder.I was a bit concerned by some of the negative reviews, but was quickly won over by this neat little gadget. I wanted to quickly address some of the concerns I saw on here:-the box says “wool winder†•in some countries yarn is referred to as “woolâ€-the spool fills up too quickly and tangles the gears •I have some cognitive issues and get super distracted way too easily. Even I managed to pay attention for the brief time it takes to wind one of these cakes up. Additionally, the size seems to be on par with all the other ball winders I’ve seen in shops and at friends houses. I can’t imagine needing one bigger.-the clamp is too small •I have clamped mine to both a 1 1/4†thick bookshelf, and to a 1/2†thick lap desk, and found it did equally well with both.My one complaint is that the yarn guide doesn’t stay in the locked position very well. However I found that if you change the angle the yarn is fed into it at, it stays just fine.If you are on the fence about getting one of these, I highly recommend giving it a try!

I’ve been crocheting since I was a kid and never knew I needed something like this until I had it. It’s helped me not only organize my huge yarn stash, but keeps the yarn from tangling up while I’m using it on a project!

I like this ball winder quite a bit. I have one issue with it and that's the metal arm. The piece that holds the yard straight then connects to the winder, it keeps falling. It doesn't seem to want to stay in place. But other then that I like it alot.

You get what you pay for with this ball winder. It mostly works fine, but the material and mechanism are cheap. The wire arm that holds the yarn between the swift and the winder is constantly collapsing in the middle of winding; I would recommend holding the yarn in your hand for tension rather than using the wire arm. If you let the tension get looser at all, the yarn will drop beneath the winder and get tangled on the axis, which is a pain to remove and usually results in cutting the yarn off (not great to have that happen when winding more expensive yarns). On the plus side, the grip is built in (my previous winder had a removable grip, which disappeared at some point). Likewise, I find the cakes it makes are nice enough - others have said that this makes weird cakes, but that was not my experience. The knitting accessories included are also fine. This is probably an okay choice if you don't want to break the bank, but if you want a winder you don't have to make compromises to use, I'd recommend saving up for a better one.

This was awful. The knob for the clamp barely works so it usually flies off the table. The yarn guide doesn’t stay in place even though the instructions say it locks, it can’t handle tension at ALL, I had to unwind my skein as I went and hold it over my wrist because it gets tangled without a guide but even loosely holding it stops it from working. Only holds 1/4 of a normal skein of bulky yarn (not super bulky, don’t know if that would even work at all). The cake is SUPER loose and I know I’m going to have issues with it tangling. I have never returned a product so fast.

Initially, I purchased this yarn baller to replace a previous one that had let me down. The old baller would lurch every so often and just couldn't get the job done. It also had a horizontal alignment, which meant that it had to use its metal arm that waved back and forth to move the yarn in a pattern to have it create the cake, which seemed to only add complexity to the balling process. As hard as I tried, I was never able to get past 15 turns without having to start over due to the yarn skipping off the main ball either on the top or bottom. After doing some research online, it became clear that many experienced home weavers used a different style of baller then the one I had. What I noticed them using was a vertical style that had a stationary pole for feeding the yarn onto the center pole which moved in an oval pattern. I was skeptical at first, but it seemed like the best option based on other weavers' opinions, so I decided to give it a try.To my surprise and relief, the baller works like a charm. After setting it up cautiously, I began cranking slowly and soon surpassed the 15 turn mark with ease. I gradually increased my speed, and the baller kept up no problem, quickly balling up 190 yards of yarn. Keep in mind that you need to keep an even tension as it creates the cake. This is an absolute must-have for anyone looking to make yarn cakes with ease. I was so impressed with my purchase that I was eager to return the previous model I got from the hobby store. As a bonus, the product came with stitch markers, needles, and row markers. Although I already had some of these, I used the stitch markers to hold down my yarn ball's tail ends, making my process even more manageable.

When I opened the package, the plastic was cracked. The winder did not spin at all when I turned the handle because the cracked piece was meant to hold it in place. I can't use this to wind wool, waste of money.
