This is the most fun I've had with an action toy in 20 years.(I hated skate boards) It's hard to do, but delivers a great sense of satisfaction when you finally get on it and actually go more that 6 feet. After that you can't stop smiling. I now manage to stay on it between 2 and 6 minutes at a shot after about 6 2hr sessions over a four week period.(slow learner but determined) It really wears you out and I need a few days for the newly discovered muscles in my legs to recover and build strength. Its a great legs workout without actually 'working' out. Check out youtube for how to videos. Now for the scary part. When you start out, especially if you are an adult or a very mature adult like myself, you have to pad yourself so that when you fall you don't get injured. Understand this; the way that you fall off a ripstik is mostly backwards, onto your hip or butt or tail bone or elbow. I wrap a 2in thick piece of foam around my hips and back and secure it with an oversized pair of jeans I bought for the purpose.(makes me look beefy) I also wear elbow pads and my bicycle helmet, (yea I ride a bike too, but this is much more fun). I've only fallen a few times but the foam padding did the trick and I was able to get up laughing.(instead of needing a wheel chair.) I also wore knee pads when I started but came to realize that you just step off when you lose it leaning forward.Happy Rip'in

My oldest son saw a friend with one of these and he wanted it so much. So we surprised him for Christmas. The RipStik is similar to a skateboard, but the front and back parts are connected by a flexible join that allows the user to wiggle the two pieces in opposite directions to create movement. My son was able to get going on his RipStik in a single day. Eight years later we still have this RipStik. It is well built of quality materials. It survived all of my older son’s antics as well as those of his two younger siblings. My oldest son even briefly considered taking his RipStik to college with him this year to use as a mode of transportation around campus. My kids all thoroughly enjoyed playing with the RipStik, which provided them with exercise and an excuse to enjoy being outside. Even after 8 years, our RipStik is in good, workable condition. I feel like this was a great purchase and would definitely recommend it.

My 8-year-old daughter (athletic/good balance) and 12-year-old son (not as coordinated) learned to ride the RipStick in about an hour with my help. We have a very slight downhill on our street which helped with initial gliding/balance and learning the twisting rip motion (learning to get on is really the big trick, after that it's not too bad - look on U-Tube for good how to ride videos by other kids). After about a week we could all go the opposite way on the street, which had a very slight uphill and was harder to master (although my daughter could do it the second day). Both kids love the RipStick but we did not purchase wrist guards initially, and a week after we got it my son fell off and fractured his wrist and was in a cast for 6 weeks (not going too fast either, just fell the wrong way)! Also, I was warned by a friend about a serious head injury to a teen she knew who fell off (not doing any tricks, just lost balance and hit her head). So, get ALL the protective gear before you ride! (The kids are on a hard surface and it doesn't take much to get a serious injury!) Get the helmet, wrist guards, knee/elbow pads (Triple 8 has good wrist guards/pads sets for this, try on for size in sporting goods store, and get skate helmet not pointed bike helmet) ... And then have fun! Great outdoor exercise for the kids!

I've got a 13 year old that is a bit on the shorter side and he originally thought this would be too big for him. After getting through a minor fit (tough moving into the teenage years) we watched a couple of Youtube videos and that was all it took. He picked it up in about 5 minutes and really enjoys riding it through the neighborhood. Do make sure you kids wear a helmet as it is easy to get over confident and try to make a tight turn or similar maneuver and end up with skinned up hands, bruised, but and a damaged ego. The equipment itself is well made and after a couple of months of use, still looks great. This is not a cheaply made board.

My son bought a knock off brand ripstick which cracked and fell apart within the first week. He had such fun on it though, that he decided he wanted a good quality one. He has a blast on this Ripstick (he is fourteen) and has had it for about a month now with hours and hours of street time and it's still in great shape, even the wheels haven't worn down much at all. He has tried a skateboard and prefers riding the Ripstik. After a little practice, it is easier to balance on and to control. Also, it's great exercise and gets him off the couch, so he can write down his time on his phys ed homework. Definitely a win-win. This may cost a little more than the knockoffs, but it is totally worth it for the superior quality you get.

Although the wheels DO wear down fast, this is a great way of transportation, and hours of fun. Honestly, I had no skateboard experience what so ever, I even consider caster boarding more fun than skateboarding since I have tried riding a skateboard before. I picked up on how to ride the ripstik in 30 minutes to an hour to have full mobility, and within two days I learned how to do tricks like hang-ten, manual, and nose manual. I love casting all over the neighborhood. Anybody I pass by wants to try it. I GREATLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO GIVE IT A TRY! I highly suggest it. Also, like I said in the beginning, the wheels do burn out pretty fast, I suggest rotating them since the back wheel does wear faster than the front, and buy a replacement pack as well. To save money, the ripstik's wheels are compatible with regular inline rollerblade wheels.

This was a gift for my 11 yr old niece and she loved it ! She figured it out the very day she got it. And in a couple days was making 360deg turns. She has a blast with it and uses it every day. The wheels are fun!
