Ours is finally cracking and ready to be replaced. But for four years we have enjoyed the amazing flavor that imparting smoke into burgers, pizzas, chicken and more does. Nothing lasts forever but this had a great run and in about to order another.

This is a sturdy and well-made item that certainly does the job intended. I would like to address an issue raised by other reviewers that frankly, rather surprised me, especially coming from presumably experienced cookers. That is, the issue of a cast-iron cooking utensil rusting if it gets wet. Yes, they do rust, as everything iron does, and heat accelerates this process. Unless you season the box like you would a cast-iron skillets. Coat the smoke box with oil, and you can do this either as a separate process or with its first use, and heat it for twenty minutes or so at high heat. The oil binds with the iron in a process called polymerization. Repeat the next couple of times you cook, and you have a well-seasoned cast-iron utensil that will never rust.This item will probably last forever. I have cast-iron skillets that have been in my family for at least a hundred years. I see I reason to doubt the immortality of this smokebox.

I used this as a smoker box on my Weber performer. I have the grate with the hole in the middle and I have the Vornado charcoal holder in the middle bellow the center hole of the grate. I place the smoker box with wood chips that I soaked in water right on top the charcoal and it smokes like crazy it doesn't light the wood chips but it turns it to charcoal. I placed the meats around the grate next time I'll use less charcoal as it heats up the grill too much. I open the bottom vents and closed the lid vents. I placed the lid to cover but I leave about 1/4 inch gap for air and it worked really good.

If you want to turn your BBQ into a smoker this will not actually do that. That being said I did like using it. It does impart the smoke flavor from the wood I used, but when I cut into the meat it does not have the smoke ring that you get from an actual smoker. I did like that it is cast iron so with care I think it will hold up over time. Not sure yet since I've only used it once so far. The down side to it being cast iron is that I found I needed to make sure I heated it well before actually putting the meat on the grill so that it could get hot enough to actual start smoking the wood. I was using a gas grill and found that It worked best by placing it on top of my diffusers under the grilling grate. When it was on top of the grate it just didn't seem to get hot enough. So if you are looking to impart smoke flavor into your meat and want something that I think will last I would recommend getting one.

Great for wood chips and pellets. Tons of smoke for around an hour with chips. Only wish they made a larger model to hold chunks for longer smokes.

This is a great buy. When you can purchase a cast iron smoker box that will last for years. Compared to the tin and aluminum boxes that last a season, if that long. Then to top it off, you get 2 bags of chips.

Gran producto, me llegó en excelente estado y funciona perfectamente para lo que está diseñado, sin embargo es necesario establecer ciertas cosas para que los futuros compradores estén enterados. Lo primero y más importantes que recuerden siempre PRECALENTARLO y no me refiero a que lo dejen a un costado del asador y después esperar que funcione de inmediato una vez que lo ocupan, no, ubíquenlo vacío en una parte de la parrilla en donde le dé bastante calor, ya que por sus mismos materiales y su construcción robusta se tarda bastante en agarrar calor, cosa que no es nada nuevo para aquellos que ya están acostumbrados a utilizar implementos de hierro fundido pero que puede ser un poco molesto para el menos conocedor, en ese mismo orden de ideas, recuerden también que cómo buen objeto de hierro fundido, una vez que agarra calor ya es muy difícil enfriarlo, por lo que deben de llenarlo con virutas, astillas o pellets ligeramente humedecidas, si no lo hacen lo más seguro es que el material que le pongan adentro se consuma muy rápido y no alcance a impregnar a la comida de ese delicioso sabor ahumado. Ahora bien, me gustaría mencionar también que el desempeño del producto difiere bastante entre los distintos tipos de asadores más comunes, por ejemplo, con los Weber de carbón, una sola caja ahumadora funciona de maravilla, sin embargo, en los asadores más grandes como los de tipo tambo una sola caja le queda algo chica, por lo que en mi caso me quite de problemas y me conseguí una segunda caja ahumadora, en lo que respecta a los asadores de gas hay que recordar que la mayoría de estos no tienen chimeneas de escape de humo, por lo que no es posible colocar la comida estratégicamente cerca de esos puntos de escape y por lo tanto no agarran tanto ese sabor ahumado, la solución a esto es muy sencilla, solo ocupan poner una segunda caja ahumadora, solo tomen en cuenta que al no tener chimeneas los asadores de gas, en el momento que abran el asador el humo va a salir por todos lados y aveces puede ser bastante incómodo para el parrillero o sus comensales.

Bought this to try and get a bit of a smoker flavour on the BBQ. It is really robust and heavy for its size. I bought some good quality hickory smoking pellets and loaded it up, however we can never seem to taste the hickory. It was worth a go, but I would purchase a proper smoker next time.

I have a gas grill that (with lid closed) I use to BBQ meats instead of just grilling them. I have a number of steel wood chip boxes that I rotate while slow smoking (they usually last about 15-20 minutes). Unfortunately, they overheat in some spots and sometimes the chips will ignite into flame. This is the first time I've used a cast iron smoker box, and it's been perfect. The rate of smoke is the same (15-20 minutes), but the heat distribution is perfect -- no flare ups. Very sturdy construction. Easy to refill during cooking. Once I'm finished and the box has cooled down, I give it a coating of vegetable oil and wipe off the excess (to keep it from naturally rusting). Great price, too!
