As a brand-new beginner on the oboe, I searched around for a good reed to start on. I chose to go with plastic since plastic reeds are less finicky than cane reeds (don't need to be soaked, less susceptible to ambient conditions). Having no ability to try anything before buying, I took a gamble on the Medium-Soft plastic reed by Chartier. It is an excellent choice, very comfortable and produces a decent sound. From visual inspection, I can see that it is still intact after having played on it for 7 weeks.

Based on reviews, I expected a quality reed with great tone. I initially had doubts due to its low price and I ended up being correct. The cut is very strange, the reed is fairly large, and it sounds like a 20 dollar kazoo.

It’s so bad but it does work I’ll give it that but the lower register is almost impossible to reach with this read

My daughter has been using this reed since August, she plays almost daily. She loves how it plays and her teacher loves the tone. The best thing about it though, she managed to hit the tip of it with her hand, which cut her hand without damaging the reed.

The reed is longer than traditional cane reeds takes some getting used to. Plays loud.

This reed is wonky. It played the lower register okay but wouldn't play the upper register at all. I tried clipping the tip and it allowed the upper register to play but it was really flat. I think these would be great for a beginning oboist but beyond that I would say nope. I wanted to check it out because I hate having to make or buy reeds all the time. If there was a plastic reed that worked great and sounded good that would be amazing. This reed, however, was not it.

When I got it the sound was terrible and very very flat because the reed was excessively long. I cut the tip a few times and actually scraped the corners and the sound and tuning got way way better. However it is still hard to take in. You could study with it but the sound is still very low in quality.
