I was a bit reluctant to try a battery-operated tool that didn’t include the battery or charger, especially since I’ve made a small investment in Ryobi batteries. But I found an adapter that allows using Ryobi batteries on Makita-type tools, and it’s available from Amazon (about $18). So I didn’t need to buy new batteries or charger.The unit comes with two cutting heads. The first is for cutting/trimming grass, ground cover, or touching up small areas on hedges. The second is for trimming hedges and will cut an approximate twelve-inch-wide area with a single pass. Both cutting heads come with clear rubber shields. Keep these on the blades when not in use – they protect both the user and the bladesIn comparison to my corded hedge-trimmer, this unit is equal in cutting ability and nearly equal in power. This unit cut through quarter-inch stems and branches without hesitation. I did find that I needed to slow my passes a bit so as not to overload the blades, but not by much.Here’s where this tool really shines: To trim the top of hedges, it’s often necessary to use a ladder. For me, I feel much safer if I can use one hand to hold on the ladder railing, leaving me with a free hand to handle the trimmer. And this unit allows me to do just that. It’s surprisingly balanced (with a battery installed) and lightweight, allowing me to trim and cut with one hand.As far as maintenance, I always spray any cutting tool with WD-40 when I start, and again before re-storing the tool. I put a heavy coat directly on the blades and run the motor briefly to distribute the WD-40 evenly. This also helps prevent rust and dulling of the edge during storage.Overall, this tool is a great addition for any homeowner who does their own yard maintenance. Not having to deal with a trailing cord makes trimming so much more convenient, and the obvious quality and construction should provide years of use. Highly recommended.

Like another reviewer, I was hesitant to try this since I don't use Makita batteries, but I also found an adapter and have been able to use it.The hedge trimmers also do their job, but I love the grass shears. We get a lot of tall grass creeping out from under our neighbors' fences that our mower can't reach, and we hesitate to use the weedwhacker along that space for fear of scraping up our fence. The grass shears have worked out perfectly for those areas. Yes, I have to get on the ground, but if you're mobile and can do that, I'd recommend this if you have the same problem. The electric component makes quick work of it.The whole set is excellent for light-duty jobs, but buying a Makita battery or adapter is inconvenient if you don't already have Makita batteries. That's my only dislike so far!

We have an old corded hedge trimmer, and we've had old battery-powered grass trimmers (long before lithium batteries and high-powered motors were a thing). This little handheld trimmer is so much more efficient and easier to handle than either of those old tools.Changing between grass cutter and hedge trimmer heads is quick and easy - just push two buttons and the attachments pivot off. The included plastic guards are nice to keep the cutting blades (and fingers) protected during storage.Our existing arsenal of Makita batteries fits perfectly, and the tool is well-balanced for one-handed use. Using it is a bit nerve-wracking since it is easy to lose focus and get your free hand close to the hedge trimmer attachment. You must be vigilant and keep your hands and fingers away from the cutters!This thing is perfect for occasional light-duty trimming of small arbovitaes and hedges. The largest branch we were able to cut through wasn't quite 1/4" in diameter - so trimming larger hedges or ornamental trees, the tool struggles.It does cut leafy portions very fast and easy due to the sharpened edges of the cutting blades. It helps tremendously if you keep the blades lubricated occasionally during use to reduce friction - a spray lubricant works well for this, and should help the blades stay sharp longer too.

I have trees in my front parkway. I try to keep them trimmed over the city sidewalk. These may that a breeze. Also, good for "rounding" my back yard buch.

For small hedges or lighter trimming, it works well—especially with the smaller blade, which gives clean cuts up to about 1/4 inch. However, I found the larger blade struggled with certain types of bushes, particularly evergreens with flexible leaves, which often get caught in the blades rather than cut cleanly. The trimmer also feels small for larger yards or heavy-duty work, so it’s best suited for minor trimming jobs or a few bushes rather than extensive landscaping. For occasional, light use, it’s a handy tool, but for more substantial needs, a larger trimmer might be a better fit.

I used it only once to take care of overgrowth along the house, and it worked well. Granted, the shrubbery wasn't too thick. If you don't have the battery, be sure to check that you are purchasing the one with the battery or purchasing it separately.

This is a hedge trimmer that comes with two styles of cutting blades. The trimmer uses Makita batteries and they actually last a lot longer than I expected. It is easy to switch cutters and isn’t too heavy to use for a long time. It would be nice (but might not be safe) to have a button to keep the trimmer left on without having to push the safety lever. I found it a bit inconvenient to have to keep it pressed while using it for long periods of time. So far it has been very durable and more convenient than a corded electric trimmer.
