There are more expensive metal clam guns, but this one worked very well for us! Sturdy and easy to use. Dug many clams during the season. Just make sure to rinse off and dry after using.

First time clamming on the Oregon Coast with this and it worked as described. The coating held up well and we did get some clams. We did unfortunately hit a few claims while digging which resulted in broken shells but with practice I am sure you can pretty well avoid that. It does take some effort to pull out, but that should be expected when you are pulling up wet sand.

Vacuum breaker works very well. It takes 3 or 4 inches pull before suction is broken then it slides like butter out of the sand. I found that when I feel like I am hitting the clam, I begin pulling up , while plugging the vacuum hole and the clam is suctioned up and it's neck is pulled far.enough up that retrieving the clam is a simple grab out of the hole with no broken shell. The handle could be a little longer for a taller person, I am 5'4" and it works good with just a slight bend at the knees. There is no plug in the bottom of the vacuum hole like the more expensive models but I find taping and rinsing keeps the small chamber free of sand without much effort. Heavier then aluminum models but I think the extra weight makes pushing into the sand easier, saving my upper body strength for pulling.

This clam gun def delivers! Have only tried once on one outing so far, Washington coast with Razor Clams. Did such a great job of pulling, maintaining suction while easing out, was a world of difference from other clam guns! Went through ~40 clams and did great for the first round. Will be back out and update if there is anything that changes, but peformance was great so far!

I have no idea what we were doing wrong with this gun. Maybe it's defective? It works great for the first pull up, pulls every bit out, but consecutive pulls don't work. It seems to lose the suction and neither husband or myself could figure out why. We tried it with gloved hands and bare hands for plugging the hole on the handle, to no avail. Every single second dig down the same hole would lose the suction on the way up.I've watched a good amount of youtube videos, I see that clam guns can work well on second, third, even fourth consecutive digs in the same hole. Not this one.The pacific razors tend to be a way down, at least here in the type of sand we dig them in. This gun fails to dig deep enough because the suction breaks on the every pull up after the first. It completely defeats the purpose of digging razors, I'm better off starting with a small shovel, less work and I ended up having to hand dig every hole another 6-8 inches that was started with this thing anyway.I am giving it three stars instead of two for now because my son was able to use it for very shallow holes and pull up little necks with it. However, it takes practically zero effort to dig them with your hands in exposed bed. He did mange to get one streamer clam that wasn't damaged with this, they aren't as deep as the pacific razors and have a softer shell. They are difficult to dig because you have to be SUPER careful not to break them, this seemed to do OK with the one he found. I will have to try it for steamers at a different spot to see how it works. If it works well for steamers I will update my review accordingly.Overall, I'm not really happy with the way it performed, not one razor clam was pulled with this gun due to the lack of depth able to be achieved, which was due to loss of proper suction.

Not much else to say. I received the unit in a large brown box. It was packaged with brown paper packing material and was wrapped in a layer of plastic packaging. It is quite sturdy and will not bend unless subject to heavy pressure or hits. The clam gun was used for razor clams on the Washington state coastline and it manages to do so, albeit with a lot of work. The hole under the handle is about the size of a thumbtack head and will need to be covered with your fingers quite thoroughly for the gun to work. I found it difficult at times to maintain a clean seal while pulling the clam gun back out of the sand. The paint has started to 'melt' away after its first usage however, so do not expect it (the paint, not the unit) to last. We've washed it after each use, but it appears that the paint will continue to fade away.

Worked as indicated, lost 1 star cause paint was ground off after first using for about 10 minutes. But this does not hinder how well it works. Well made, welds where nice and clean, no sharp edges, light enough to carry around easily.
