VINEHEAT DE-ICING CABLES AT WORK

  • This cable is designed for installation on inclined roofs with non-combustible tab shingles (such as asphalt shingles), metal or plastic gutters, downspouts, and valleys.
  • Ice dams should not form as long as a heated path from the roof to a safe discharge area is maintained.
  • Install the de-icing heating cable in a “zigzag” pattern along the lower edge of the sloping roof. The cable should extend at least 12” above the level of the outer building wall or 6” above the snow fence, whichever is higher, and extend down into the gutter. This will ensure a continuous run-off path for water.
  • The cable can work with an optional power ON/OFF switch or a Thermostatically Controlled Adapter which is a moisture and temperature sensor control that operates the de-icing cable only when moisture is present and the temperatures drop below freezing.

INSTALLATION TIPS

  • First, uncoil the cable (making sure it does not cross or overlap itself).
  • Plug into a 120V receptacle until it is warm and pliable.
  • Unplug the cable before installation.

Warnings

  1. Do not use to remove ice dams that have already formed or to clear the roof of ice and snow.
  2. Do not use on roofs with wooden shingles, rubber roofs, or composite (tar and gravel) roofs, or on wooden gutters or downspouts.

SNOW AND ICE BUILD-UP ON ROOFS CAN BE EXPENSIVE AND DANGEROUS

Heavy snow and ice on roof

SNOW AND ICE CAN BE ‘PRETTY’ COSTLY

Although pretty to look at, snow and ice build-ups on roofs can result in expensive repairs to roofs and exterior walls as well as interior walls, ceilings, and floors.

Man clearing off snow and ice on roof with a shovel

BAD IDEA #1

Shoveling snow on a flat concrete sidewalk or a driveway can lead to injury. Standing on ice and snow on an inclined roof and shoveling ice and snow is much more likely to have a bad ending. And it can also seriously damage your roof.

Clearing ice and snow from roof with a broom

BAD IDEA #2

Standing on a ladder in frigid weather and using a broom to clear off snow and ice is almost as dangerous as Bad Idea #1.

This product will be used to prevent snow and ice from creating an ice dam around my gutters.I love this heater cord and it's easy to install within the gutter.

I put this in the gutter over my garage. Did NOT run it on the roof. It worked - melted snow falling in the gutter (10 inch snow storm). The electric cord section is shorter than my last cable heater. (2 ft vs 5 ft) Had to cut the electric plug off, drill a hole in the facial board and install a new plug inside the garage. Also installed a smart plug so I can turn it on/off from inside.

Before installing tested it out on some ice in my driveway. Left a portion of it coiled up with the other half stretched out across the driveway. The stretched out portion melted straight through the ice within a matter of hours the part that I left coiled up melted its own plastic outer layer. Going to have to order a new one but very impressed with how quickly it melted through the ice. Just make sure it's not touching itself once plugged in.

Lost power and gutters froze solid. When power came back on it only took about 2 hrs to completely melt the ice.

This is an off-brand we haven't used yet (we are a professional roofing company) We buy about 400 rolls of this a season. We picked it up because they had the exact size we needed (140') and didn't want the 160' and waste 20' stuffed down a downspout.Anyway, it seemed to install ok, it did feel a bit thin however compared to our other tapes. The price seemed ok, and it was delivered quickly. I'm leaving at a 3 star for now until we watch it for the winter. If we check back with them and it worked well, we'll bump it up to a 4.
