This is the Denis Wick Synthetic Straight Mute.This is light weight, low cost, but effective straight mute, with good tone.Yes, this mute will reduce the volume of your horn if you use it during practice.However, this is NOT a 'practice mute' as such, but a normal straight mute, very suitable for performances.It fits very well in my bass trombone, and also my small bore tenor trombones.Outastanding!

I've been using Dennis Wick mutes for about 25 years, finally getting around to replacing some old dented and beat up mutes from gigs and pit jobs over the years. This mute is the same quality as my old ones, just pretty and new. If you're looking for mutes, Dennis Wick mutes are pretty much the gold standard. Spend a little more upfront and just be done with it.

This mute does not make it fully to "silent" but it does cut the sound tremendously which makes rehearsals at home easier on your neighbors. I find it causes my pitch to go about a quarter-step flat, so if you are rehearsing with a recording you need to push the tuning slide in considerably, or play the slide positions a bit sharper than you normally do (that's not going to fix 1st position though!). The mute does fit so far into the bell that you can easily keep it in your instrument inside its case, which is handy for travel. But the tone quality is so suppressed, it does not have the same tone quality as a standard straight mute. Thus you would need to bring your straight mute to ensemble rehearsals and performances as well. I haven't played around with cutting the foam rings to get more sound out to see if I could get this mute to approximate a straight mute. So far I'm satisfied with this as a near-silent mute for practicing at home. I will say that it fits securely in the instrument with the foam strips without forcing the mute into the bell (as you sometimes need to do with mutes having cork strips).

So far I have liked the mute for practicing in my apartment, works as described, will have to put some more hours into it but so far so good. Word of warning: the mute came in a standard cardboard box that contained no padding or protective material at all. I was glad and lucky to see that the mute was undamaged in shipping but was surprised that there was no padding to protect it. Otherwise no issues

If you can get this on sale, it is a great deal. I didn't realize how awful my previous aluminum straight mute was until I heard my sound from this one.As with any mute, it is dent prone, but I haven't had it fall out of my horn, ever.

The packaging of the product was great, but upon opening the box, I discovered that there were many red short fibers adhered to the product. These fibers seemed to have fallen from the lining of the product, and it took me some time to clean them up. However, they continue to shed even after cleaning. I'm concerned that these fibers will continue to shed and potentially be inhaled when using the product in the future.

Most of the other straight mutes out there are at least twice the price of this one. I like it better than the red and white mute it replaced. Not sure you need anything more unless you are a full-time professional player.
