  • High-speed steel tools are good for most general purpose applications, offering a combination of hardness and toughness for wear resistance
  • Uncoated tools feature just the base substrate without any additional treatment or coatings and are suitable for a wide range of applications
  • Round shank with square end
  • Straight flute tools allow chips to collect in the flutes as they cut and are well suited for most applications in shallow cuts

Drill America t/a series Tap America spiral-pointed or machine Tap is originated to solve the problem of Tap breakage in through hole tapping. The machine Tap shoots chips ahead of the cutting action, thus reducing loading and clogging in the flutes. It is recommended for use in through or blind holes which allow for chip accumulation in the bottom of the hole. Ideal for threading a wide variety of ductile materials, copper and copper alloys, Brass and non-metallics. Uncoated tool feature just the base substrate without any additional treatment or coatings and is suitable for a wide range of applications. Round with square end shank. Straight flute tool allow chips to collect in the flutes as it cut and is well suited for most applications in shallow cuts. I used this on some medium carbon steel, it cut great and is still sharp after a few dozen holes. I'll probably pick up a few more, it's great for the price.

I used this to make several good enough 1/4"-20 taps. I thought this tap's flute design would push the steel filings out thru the drill hole, but I had to back the tap out several times to clear the hole. I was hoping a new tap would cut the threads without needing to exert a lot of torque, but this tap required enough torque that I was concerned about breaking the tap. In the end, I tapped 4 holes in John Deere tractor steel with no breakage.I don't know much about taps or where to source them, but I would hope there are better ones out there. That said, I think this one was ok.

What is pictured for this item is in fact a spiral point tap. This style of tap is much more efficient for tapping through holes. They can be used on a CNC or a power tapping head. I was disappointed to receive a taper tap. A taper tap is the same thing you could buy in any good hardware store.
