My son is a budding Bassonist. He did not like these reeds. They just didn't "feel right". Take with a grain of salt as he's just beginning. But definitely noticed a difference to other reeds he's used.

I have been playing bassoon for about 6 years and unfortunately have not learned how to make reeds yet. I've tried many different brands (Jones, Singing Dog, Fox, etc.), but I have to say that Emerald reeds are my favorite by far. Since first trying them a year ago, they're practically all I use now. Though some reviews say otherwise, I've always received these reeds in practically perfect condition, and with a little a bit of shaving, cutting, and adjusting (its unrealistic to assume any reed will suit you out of the box, find out what your preferred length/thickness/shape of reed is), they've all played wonderfully. They sound easily as medium soft reeds should, allow me to play the full range (low Bflat to high D) without difficulty, and produce a clear tone. They're also cheap compared to most other store bought reeds, which usually cost in the $15~20 range. The only gripe I have is that about 1 in 4 reeds will have the two halves of the reed slightly separate where they connect to the bocal, resulting in an air/spit leak. Though this is easily fixable with a reamer, this could be very annoying without the proper tools.Overall though, this is a great, consistent, and affordable reed, and I would suggest it to any bassoonist who still relies on premades.

I bought this ready in about 6 months ago and I was never able to understand why I couldn't make a sound off of it. The reed is not cut at all, it is just two pieces of cane stuck together. My reed is completely missing the thick inner section of the reed called the heart and will not play at all. I ended up purchasing from a reputable buyer on GoBassoon.com for only a few dollars more and these reeds have been play tested by a professional before being shipped to customers. Don't buy cheap reeds. Just don't.

This seemed more like a "soft" reed to me.

I have worked on several Emerald reeds now, trying to get them to play properly. They appear to be machine made, which would be fine, except that the pattern they use creates a reed with a very thin "heart" area. This causes several notes (E3, especially) to be unstable and play very flat unless unnaturally lipped up to pitch. The only cure is to clip the tip shorter, to get to a thicker heart area of the reed. The problem is that a shorter reed will play sharper, and after clipping the tip back to where the E3 is stable, the reed is unusably out of tune. I tried buying a medium hard reed, hoping for a thicker heart, but it is still too thin to play correctly. Emerald, I wish you would revamp your system. It does not work now.
