Legere Reeds

Synthetic Bassoon Reeds

The Légère bassoon reed responds instantly from the box. Its unique material never needs to be moistened, allowing the player to focus on their music and not the reed. It projects easily and clearly while producing a clean and focused sound. It is available in Medium and Medium-Hard strengths to complement various styles of playing and set ups.

The reeds are cut in halves using 3-axis, computer-controlled precision cutting machines and are never molded or stamped. The halves are then bonded together again using a digitally controlled system resulting in a reed which is balanced in both blades, and has the right combination of tip thickness, heart, and flexibility.

The combination of tip thickness, heart and unique material makes it easy to glide from the low registers to the high registers of the instrument. While some of the top bassoonists in the world play this reed, it is also used by players of all levels.

Great practice reed as I’m getting back to playing after 20 years

Great reed for beginners to bassoon. Plays just as well as a cane reed but last much longer.

WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. I am an ex professional bassoonist from the '70s and '80s who studied with Ray Nowlin and Alan Goodman. I made my own reeds for 25 years. I play on a Heckel bassoon and continue to play in multiple groups. I stopped making reeds some time ago because I no longer played professionally and didn't want to take the time. After reading reviews and watching ads, I decided to try a Legere reed. The higher register was very thin, Eb and C# on the staff were very flat in tone and pitch, and the reed was extremely hard to blow. I contacted Legere to inquire about possible fixes. They never responded to multiple e-mails.

This is good to have in my reed case for practicing or emergencies. It is nice to know that I always have something usable if reed-making isn't going well. The only flaw with this one is that I struggle with high notes. They crack easily and I have to put in a lot of effort to get them to speak. Lower and middle register sound great, surprising reedy! Forget about pianissimo in the low register though. Not a second bassoon reed. For a plastic reed, I was very impressed and would buy again. This would be PERFECT for a high school student who doesn't want to struggle with the inconsistencies of buying commercial reeds.

Great reed! Very responsive. It requires fuller air support to play at it's best, though that will likely get rid of my bad habits. It fits my cvx bocals perfectly which has a medium sized bore and it performs great with low and high ranges. My fox plastic bassoon is weird about high notes and this reed can bring them out without trouble.

I was pretty hesitant to buy this, as it's a lot of money to sink on something that may or may not work. I also had no idea if I needed the medium or the medium hard. I went with the medium, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised! It worked as well as my best cane reed, right out of the box! It responded well in every register, and I didn't have any attack issues while playing through some scales in all the registers. We'll see how it lasts throughout an actual practice session and performance, but my immediate impressions are that this is way better than I expected it to be! I'm a lapsed player who majored in bassoon in college and played professionally for a short bit ~15 years ago, but I never bought my own profiler or shaper, so I ran out of playable reeds pretty quickly, and buying them and adjusting was expensive, too, so anything that gets me back into playing is worth the money for me.

The basic issues with the legere reeds are the adjustment from cane and getting used to a reed that has very defined playing requirements. By that I mean they work very good if the player is willing to conform to what the reed needs....if the player is willing to do that, then the reed will work just fine, but there is little room for flexibility that cane reeds provide. All in all the Legere Bassoon reeds are solid and produce a very good sound, and will last for months.

My son, an accomplished Bassoonist, is very hard to buy for so when he mentioned this $156 dollar bassoon Reed that he loves I jumped right on it. It appears to be okay but was delivered in an Amazon mailer instead of a box. Definitely feel like this $156 reed should be marked to be shipped in a small box instead of a mailer! Now have to wait for him to open it on Christmas and return home with it to try it out to see if it is okay. So frustrating!

Expensive but very consistent in quality and sound. Yet to see how it performs over time.

If you want medium (as labelled) then you may wish to try hard. A lot of money to mess around with when you can't try them.

For a synthetic, has great tone and general sound. The best of the best out of any synthetic reed out there, and has a surprising strength that has kept up for a year+.
