High quality, good sized rod that produces ample sparks on every strike. This will be a nice addition to my backpacking kit.

I've never used one of these and was able to light a fire within a few tries. Tip for beginners; use a few cotton balls to start your fire. They ignite almost instantly, lol. The best method I found after a few videos was to place the rod at a slight angle, onto a couple of cotton balls. Then strike the rod up and down really fast and within 3 seconds it would ignite. Great tool to have.

I was glad to see the high quality of the ferro rod. The cordage, striker and "whistle" are not necessary and were quickly removed. The quality of the rods stand for themselves. They are a perfect size. The wood handles are securely attached and comfortable to use. I prefer ferro rods to other ignition types if using only wood kindling.It may take a while to wear out these two, but I'll be back for another when I do.

After trying, getting sparks but no flames and watching you tube videos, finally got it. We use cotton ball with Vaseline and it lights with just a few tries. With the pieces separated, but string is long enough to get sparks

Can only give it 4 stars for now being as I haven’t used it camping. For the price it’s a good size and comes with what seems like quality accessories. Fits well in my Bark River sheath
