About Diesel Exhaust Fluid Heater

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid Heater, commonly called the "DEF Heater", is located in the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid / Urea) tank and actually contains the pickup tube for the reductant pump module, an electric heating element, a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor, and an electrode-type level sensor. It enables the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to function at low temperatures.

The reductant tank heater keeps the DEF or reductant warm when temperatures are below freezing. The reductant, which is a reducing agent, helps reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) within the diesel exhaust after treatment system.

As many of the reviews say, This is not a quality product. I have replaced my def tank heater twice within the last two years. Spend the money and buy oem. The little bit of money you save is not worth having to repeat this job.

Installation was relatively straightforward with the aid of a video on YouTube. Don't forget the rubber washers from the miscellaneous parts package. Took me about 2 hours to remove the old one and install the new one. Having a full def reservoir definitely made it a little harder, but still doable. It's been installed for several weeks now, and the temperature has dropped to around 20 degrees fahrenheit. No issues so far. Appears to be well made.

This part is $500 at the dealership and $300 for the mechanic to install. I decided to do it myself. The biggest pain is that the tank was full when trying to remove but an extra set of hands made it easier. I read the other reviews and bought the warranty hopefully I won’t need it. It does make a vacuum like sound for a few seconds when you turn the truck off but for $88 I’ll take it.

They didn't tap one of the mounting holes for the pick up unit. Now I'm out another $40 for a metric tap kit I will probably never use again. If I wasn't able to fix the part myself, I would have had a disabled truck until a new one showed up. Receiving a useless part is one reason I hesitate to order parts from Amazon.

The DEF tank removal was a pain but once the tank was out, the heater installed easily. The price was really good. Much cheaper than OEM. OEM heater only lasted 4 years and 70K miles in Texas heat.
