What is a Goethe Ball Barometer and how does it work? Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) was a German writer and politician whose work influenced the likes of Nietzsche, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Goethe was also keenly involved in studies of natural science and color theory. He developed and popularized his simple but effective “Weather Ball Barometer“ using principles developed by Torricelli. This device predicts barometric weather changes by observing the rise and fall of liquid within a sealed glass sphere. A low water level in the spout suggests “high pressure”, representing fair weather. A high water level in the spout suggests “low pressure” and forecasts poor weather conditions. While the storm glass will not indicate exact barometric pressure in numerical values, it is still regarded as an accurate monitor of air pressure changes. This item can be filled with any color liquid desired.

Barometer apps were often in disagreement when I tried to use them to track weather, but this little old timey but accurate device relies on the direct air pressure. It is always responding directly to local conditions. I've learned to gauge what level in the glass precedes physical problems from my illness and what reading means I should have extra energy to tackle the day! I can read this thing at a glance from across a room and know when to take medication so that inflammatory pain doesn't get a chance to knock me down!(Oversimplified: Lower pressure means my nerves have a chance to expand and inflame further. Think how a marshmallow goes POOF in a vacuum chamber. Like that, but more subtle... and less tasty.)If you or someone you love has a condition that flares up when a storm rolls in, this thing is EXCELLENT to have. It takes a little fiddling to set it up but the directions are very neat and clear. Once set up, it's no maintenance so far.

Pretty but filling it was a journey. The tube they provided to go into the device didn't actually fit inside! and the top of the plastic tube that attaches to the syringe for filling wasn't actually open so I had to jab a hole with a needle to open it and allow the liquid to pass through.

Bought to replace an old swan I had bought from a local glass blower who had once set up shop in a nearby mall. It hangs near the exit so we know why we have headaches, or feel lethargic, before heading out for the day. Also, I'm happy to say that it came with a syringe to fill it; I had bought one not knowing this as it wasn't meantioned.

I just ordered my second weather glass. Broke the first one while swatting a fly. I've had various types of these glasses, but this one by far is the best and the prettiest.

To small. Liquid reaches too and spills over

A little surprised that I had to fill it myself, but on reflection, of course you have to fill it after you get it. Otherwise, it wouldn't work as a barometer.

Best water barometer so far. Filled halfway with red wine from the fridge for the zero point, excellent visibility.
