There are 2 basic designs for most mills:One where spice sits at the bottom in a separate jar and grinding mechanism is at the top. There is usually a lid at the top, no screw protruding. That one usually fails at the rotation point or where the grinding mechanism rests, right above the jar.The second is this one, a single metal rod from top to bottom. Spice sits above the grinding mechanism. You adjust the coarseness of the grind with a screw at the top. It is a bit harder to fill, but this design is more robust.I took this apart as soon as I got it. Both upper and lower parts of the grinding mechanism are ceramic, NO plastic. There is a small plastic gasket/centering part towards the bottom of the mill, it cannot be seen easily unless you take it apart, or open it and look with a flashlight inside from the top. Everything else is wood, metal, ceramic. I am going to use it as it is until the metal gromet at the top separates, as others experienced, then drill 3 small holes in the gromet and attach it back with 3 tiny screws to hold it in place.I wish the grinding mechanism was carbon steel or stainless steel because I need it for peppercorns. Steel is better for peppercorns. For salt you need ceramic as it would rust otherwise. One should not have to do that, fix a clear design flaw. That would lower the rating to be 4 stars. But given the good (IMO) quality of materials, low price and fairly easy fix I think it's worth 5 stars.

The pepper grinder is very well made, and easy to use, but it doesn't seem to have any way to get a courser grind adjustment.

Harder to turn than expected but assume it will loosen with more use

Functions and looks great. My only criticism is that you can’t was out the inside. It’s just rough finish wood.

This pepper mill worked for one day. Now it doesn't grind at all. Useless junk. AND Amazon won't take a return since I threw away the box it came in. Even if I could return it, they make it very difficult.I used to buy gift cards and accept them from friends and relatives, but no longer send them or get them. We have gotten tired of Amazon's bad business practices. How many hours have your spent trying to compare items on Amazon that all look the same but have differnt brands. They are most likely made in the same Chinese factory, but you have to waste your time trying to pick the right one. Amazon has put many mom and pop stores, along with department stores out of business.

Over the years I've worn out several pepper grinders and inherited one on its last legs. When the time came I looked at a lot of grinders - some priced at what I consider offensive levels. This one seemed a bargain. Using it, I believe it is. It looks nice, very traditional and works well. As usual with grinders, the tighter the nut the finer the grind. It may not work as smoothly as some of the expensive ones - you can feel - more like sense - the cracking of the pepper corns and it's never given a bit of trouble.

likes: love the look. the wood color is exactly as pictured. love the low price. love that you can adjust the coarseness of the grind.dislikes: the metal piece that secured the square grinding rod that fits tightly into the round wooden cap (essential to the use of this grinder) has come loose a dozen times since purchasing. we knock it back in with a hammer and screwdriver otherwise, the grinder will not engage. It is frustrating while in the middle of preparing a meal.I am looking for another rustic pepper grinder because this constant manual repair is not sustainable. I guess you get what you pay for.

Grind is constant and reliable, as advertised. Seems unlikely to break, although I’ve been using it for less than a week.

Both grinders are exactly the same. While the one used for pepper works ok the one for Himalayan salt is not good
