As many have reported, Troy-Bilt Chipper/Shredders eat belts. I am no belt expert but from what I have learned, these belts (equivalent to Troy-Bilt belts, are what are called "fractional" horse power belts. I recall that my original 5HP engine did not go through more than 2 belts a year, if even that. After changing the engine to an 11HP one, the belts were flying apart within a few hours of use. Higher torque/HP/speed were the issue. In addition, the "idler pully" was applying pressure at an angle to the belt because of wear on the bushing of the idler pully. I haven't fixed this issue yet because parts are made of unobtanium for this 30+ yr old machine. Winter fabrication job, I fear. BUT, slowing the engine speed a bit seems to lessen the wear on the belts and still has the cylinder hammers doing their job on my yard scraps (leaves and branches). 2" or greater branches are still hard on the belts but I don't chip larger branches since they make a nice fire in my woodstove. Don't blame the belts. Check your pully alignment and slow the throttle down a bit and your belts will last longer.
