Purchased these for a home electronics project to drive some LEDs from a Raspberry Pi. Selected base resistors of a value that should have put the transistor into saturation. Not even close. I should be reading near zero volts on the collector at saturation. I read greater than 1.5 volts. This is after dropping my base resistance by half from my initial calculation.

I spot checked the beta of 10 in the package (base resistor 1M, collector resistor 1k, powered by 9V supply, divided the 1k voltage by the 1M voltage, multiplied by 1000) and all were in the 350 to 380 range. I checked a couple of factory fresh pedigreed 2N3904 transistors from a reputable manufacturer and distributor and the betas were in the 150 to 250 range. Huh.Please be aware two things:1. All 2N3904 / 2N3906 pinouts are non-standard compared to other transistors! C and E are swapped. I've learned (painfully!) to never assume, and to always read the datasheet even with simple parts like this.2. I'm an MSEE and I didn't know this until I ran into it lately: if you swap C and E the transistor will still amplify! But the beta will be quite low. Turning one of these around I get a beta of around 8. This is actually used sometimes to emulate / substitute older transistors which had poor gain with newer ones.I don't know, but I suspect at least some of the bad reviews here may be folks wiring these up incorrectly.
