From the Manufacturer

Taper Pipe Die 1-7/16" Across Flat Die 1/2"-14 NPT. Advanced die geometry allows for faster cutting! This hexagon die is made of high carbon steel for cutting of external threads by hand. The die size is etched on the surface for easy identification. The first number represents the diameter of the machine screw die; the second number is the distance between the threads per inch. It's best suited for plumbing and air applications. Ideal for areas with limited space, just use a wrench or socket!

I used this as soon as I got it to thread a brass bath pipe and it seemed to work perfectly.

I used this to cut new threads on a 1/2 brass nipple that I need to shorten to an odd size, and it worked just fine.Prior to purchase, I noticed a couple of reviews indicating that some of the cutting edges broke off. I've been using taps and dies for over 30 years and have never had a tool break or become damaged from normal use. Pretty much everyone knows to use cutting oil or kerosene liberally, but I am surprised to find that many folks don't know that when you're cutting, back up a bit every quarter turn or so to help keep the cutting edges cleared out of shavings and debris. It takes more time, but the overall process is easier, your threads will be better, and your tools will last longer.

My least favorite job is working on old plumbing. This die did the job in correcting and cutting a small amount of new thread in a +70 year old 1/2" buried piece of iron pipe near the base of the thread. I've had good luck with other Erwin tool products and this $20 die saved me a $200-$250 plumbing bill.Note: You need a commercial pipe clamp and big die handle to use this properly to thread a pipe from scratch.

A very good die for the money. Cuts nice clean threads even on old fireplace cast iron gas pipe. Definitely saved the day and a lot of money for me.

Used to cut new threads after shortening a 4 1 1/2 brass pipe, make sure to use plenty of lubricant while cutting. I did not have the proper handle this die should be used with, I used a vise to hold the die and vise grips to hold the pipe. It will require some muscle sonce the vise grips will not give you the leverage you need. Worked out great.

This is better suited for chasing existing threads than cutting new ones but the latter can be done if you go slowly and use lots of cutting fluid. Ended up breaking tooth on 3rd thread but that was more my fault than the tool.

Has worked great thus far, I have only used it on brass and copper which are softer materials but it has cut nice clean threads.
