I have played saxophone and clarinet for about six years and six months ago I picked up bassoon to play in my schools wind ensemble. As a beginner on the instrument it is hard to find appropriate reeds that are inexpensive and produce quality sound, but after purchasing about seven or eight of Jones reeds and a number of other types of reeds I have found that Jones are much more reliable and out of the seven or eight I have purchased only one was below my standards but after a bit of shaping played perfectly in practice.I would definitely recommend these reeds to anyone picking up the bassoon, I intend to continue purchasing Jones reeds until I can afford the tools to start carving my own reeds.

My daughter has played the bassoon and these are by far her favorite reeds. They are hard enough to be durable and get out lovely tone on her bassoon.Yet they're soft enough that she's not killing herself with her embouchure.

I'm a new player starting out for bassoon and have been looking for good quality inexpensive reeds. Not only are these reeds cheaper than the brand they sell at my local music store, they are also better quality. I used to use Richard's, but after seeing how well these reeds are crafted and their price, I'm not going back. Highly recommend, and they play very well.Update: After buying about 5 or so of these reeds, a couple were not very good or playable for long, but I suppose you get what you pay for. Might try the Jones Artist reeds to see if the quality is more consistent, although it's expensive.

This is a great product and I will buy it again. I have experimented with cheap, foreign made reeds which can't even hold the same note, much less play in tune. This is a refreshing change. It's a great balance between affordable and a great product. I have no interest in making my own reeds, so I will continue to purchase Jones reeds for future use.

My son plays the bassoon, so this review is based upon what he has told me. He prefers this brand over any other brand I have bought for him. They seem to last longer as well. The ones I buy at the music store break pretty quickly, but this brand lasts several months of constant use. He told me he likes the texture of the reed better, and he feels it is easier to get a more consistent sound out of it. For me, the price is a plus too. Bassoon reeds are expensive, and this one is a bargain.

Son is an intermediate bassoonist. Bought about 30 of these reeds so far from various sources and they are fairly consistent. However, 3 have arrived bad (splits & chips). That's 10% failure rate but all were returned and replacements were fine.About quality: they are not top tier quality, it's obvious and the price reflects that. But they have been CONSISTENT. This means the same minor adjustments are made to them when they arrive (bored out slightly larger & down a little further and tighten up wiring). These adjustments make them good reeds for beginning and intermediate bassoonists. I cannot provide feedback re:suitability for advanced pieces.Right out of the box rating: 2.5. After adjustments: 4/5.

It's a bassoon reed, and it's medium-hard. I'm not a bassoonist; I bought test for my son. But he likes these more than most which is fine by me. The one issue he had with one of them is that the opening for the bocal was more square than round, but we fixed that with a couple of small rods and a little leverage.

I was unable to produce any sound out of the box.The reed was too thick, too hard and too much opening. I had spent some time to adjust and still, it sounded muffled, not clean. It won't play in tune.
