The threaded joints are the weak points for obvious reasons. My soil is loamy and pretty easy to probe. This item might have a tough time with clay soil.One old farmer's trick is to press a nut or collar of the appropriate size on to the shaft just above the point. That makes the hole oversize so that the full length of the shaft isn't dragging against soil when probing. I intend to do that and turn the nut to a round OD.

Well built but connections loosen very quickly when probing hard ground. Connections also reduce overall strength. Not suitable for hard ground.
