I use mainly polymer and air dry clay. The ridges on the table make the air dry clay release easily. For polymer clay I put a silicone mat on top of the table. The top is made of metal. The base is a sturdy plastic. It turns smoothly on the base, I like that I have a dedicated clay sculpting table instead of covering my cake decorating turntable with plastic so I can safely use it with polymer clay.
