Donʻt use a pick or a screwdriver. Use this tool from Lisle to remove camshaft seals. It is especially helpful on hard to reach seals, such as those on the rear (firewall) cylinder bank of V6 engines. Old seals can be baked hard and difficult to remove. Lisle designed this tool to provide better leverage and it works like a charm.

Nicely pulls seals. However, I dock it one star because the small hooks are just too brittle. I tried to gently coax the bend to a slightly different angle and it snapped (my bad). They generously ship it with one extra. So I replaced it. But then that one broke while removing the second camshaft seal. So I had to come back here and buy some replacement hooks to finish my job. Go smooth, easy and steady. It does the job nicely just go easy on it.

I bought this tool because it was specifically recommended by various sources to pull the rear seal on Subaru EJ25 motors. I did not work.The hooked end was easy enough to get between the seal and the crank but when I attempted to pull the seal out the hook immediately broke. So I put the new hook on the tool and made a second attempt at pulling the seal out, this time I tried to use a bit more finesse. The second hook broke without much force applied to the seal.Don’t waste your money on this tool, just drill through the seal carefully and drive a course thread screw into the hole. Then pull the main seal with a pair of vice grips attached to a slide hammer or a claw hammer and a block of wood.

Been a pro shade-tree mechanic for 35 years. Before I could "legally" drive I was pulling motors and fixing cars. Never tried to replace a seal without a tear-down, because everything I worked on needed to be torn down and fixed! Friend asked me to do a tune up on their 3.4 Toyota, and the timing belt/water pump is quite a task. Watched a video and the guy demonstrated pulling the back plate, cam pulleys, and the seals. Wow - I gotta get that seal puller! While the seals were not obviously leaking, since I was that far into it I decided to give it a shot. The puller worked just as described. The old seals were hard and definitely needing replaced. I also had to buy a seal installer to go around the shaft, but the kits are reasonable given how long they're serviceable for. All-in-all, this tool is fantastic for main or cam seals when you're not doing a full disassembly. Thinking back... how many rear main seals did I not change and cause early life failures of clutches because I didn't have this tool... live and learn.

Sometimes you have seals that are very hard to get into for removing, and these do the job.
