Yeah, you can make a bare loop in wire rope. But you can extend the life by using a rope thimble. I used these on my Christmas megatree for the guy wires and they worked out great.

Just beware of the ends, they are sharp. Depending on your cable application, you may want to use some emery cloth to clean up the sharp edges.

This is a package of wire rope thimble. They are made with 304 stainless steel and designed for 1/8 to 5/32 inch diameter wire rope. You get 50 pieces in the package and the size designation is M4. I have wire rope that is larger than these thimbles and I'm not sure they will work for me. They are excellently made and strong!

These are just a bit longer than the ones I have from the local hardware store. The stainless finish appears to be as good or better than most of the stainless hardware I have purchased. The open end is pretty small. In the past I have had a tough time getting the crimp close enough to the thimble to make a nice looking eye (the cable flares out from the thimble before it gets to the open end). These are even tighter at the opening. I will likely bend these thimbles open a bit before using them.

Purpose for Product: Construct a connection point to stretch a small cable to reinforce a gate.Product Inspection: Resealable plastic bag containing 50 304 stainless steel wire rope thimbles. Each piece appears to be uniformly shaped without any burrs or sharp edges. They are magnetic, see photo.Product Performance: Wrapped a thimble with the door suspension cable and secured with a crimping sleeve.Summary: Thimble worked as it should to provide a secure connection point. Found no defects and the pricing seems reasonable.

Thimbles are just right for 1/8 inch wire rope. They buffer the round shape without stress/strain when the rope pulls, which is better for the rope loop coating than without the thimble. The thimble ends are fairly close to each other, which makes it easy to snug the crimp close, but there's some separation off the thimble, so a bit of work to increase the spacing works wonders.

These thimbles work fairly well although the radius is a little tight for wire this size. I got the 6mm version and it is pretty difficult to bend the wire rope around the thimble, better to add the crimp first and slide it up towards the thimble. Even doing that the thimble may end up a little loose. If ordering again I would probably look for some with a slightly larger radius on the end.
