This set is a fascinating idea for a teenager who likes to do art-on-the-go. The little paint palette is truly little (think of it as being about the size of a pad of post-it notes when open). The paints and brushes themselves are several times as big as the palette. That makes the palette itself really portable, but the paints aren't so portable, presenting a bit of a conundrum in how to carry the whole package.The set comes with 5 separate items in one shipping bag -- the paints as a set, the paper pad, the mini palette, a binder clip to hold the paint palette open, and the brush markers. Packing them into a small box would definitely make the whole set more attractive. Adding a little printed page (similar to one of the graphics included in the item description) would help make this giftable, since your gift recipient might need an explanation of how to use it. And, a box like that could help hold the whole items together, so you can actually take them when traveling.As it is, I'll need to find a way to hold these together in a little box or bag so my daughter can use them more easily. The quality of the paint and paper seems adequate for a young artist (my daughter is in middle school art classes). Adults might enjoy this also, but I wouldn't recommend this for younger kids.

I was a little surprised that this comes with paint - small tubes - but another reviewer has weighed in and said the paint isn't that great. Honestly, I don't care. I'm here to dabble, and this has everything right in the box to get going from paper to water brushes to even a binder clip to hold your book to your palette.It's a small enough investment that it can be a novelty toy/gift, but if you like it enough you'll probably find you start upgrading it bit by bit. My biggest concern I suppose is that the paint pans are just bare wood and would soak up whatever you put in them, but again...sort of a low-stress novelty item, and getting a bit messy is part of the point.Definitely a fun/neat gift to play around with that's very easy to use - you can open the box and immediately have everything you need to get started.

I had high hopes for this little set, but it's not a coherent *set*, it's a mix of mismatched art supplies that really don't add up to anything useful. The little palette is just wood -- so maybe you can (very carefully!) dribble a half-drop of paint from the tube into one of the tiny wooden wells, and try awkwardly to work from it for a few moments before the moisture is absorbed by the wood below...The palette is in two pieces that stick together lightly with magnets, or can be held with the large clip. Photos show the clip adhering the palette to a backing board of some sort? But that's not included. Just a separate tiny (and very cute because it's so small) pad of watercolor paper.The water brushes aren't a super convenient way to paint and...Overall, none of the materials are high quality or well-thought-out.

This kit offers all of the essentials for portable watercolor painting, however the wooden palette is laughably small and fragile. I'm not sure how anybody could use it. The wells are so tiny I couldn't get paint into them to store, nor mix. Otherwise the paints are ok.

Mini is not an exaggeration. When I unpacked the bubble envelope these came in I actually laughed out loud at how tiny the palette is. Smaller than a matchbox. But it is wonderful. As someone that grew up using whatever I could get my hands on everywhere I went to work with, I would have loved a little palette like this that I could clip right onto the little sketchbook it comes with. Now I get to pass it on to my teen and watch her enjoy it! The water pens are a great idea, and while a little sensitive to pressure they work well. A lot less cleanup, but I would still pack a little folded papertowel with it all in a plastic resealable bag to make sure.

The good: This is a great gift set. Combine it with a nice gift bag or pencil case and it's really great. The little palette is super cute and it's good for small watercolors. you aren't painting a full sheet of watercolor paper with this amount of paint. The water brushes are adequate in that the water doesn't pour out and the brushes are snappy. The clip is sturdy and holds the palette to a sketchbook or pad easily. The pad of paper is cute and allows you to remove the small post-it sized sheets. The paper is a nice weight for the size.The paint is not great. It's chalky and not very pigmented and take this whole set from a 5 to a 3 (I awarded and extra star because the brushes and paper are nice.) The paint is only suitable for children.As a whole this set is very cute and very nice, but fill it with nicer paint.

I had a different idea of what this set was going to be, but it's still really great. The small wooden part is basically a very very small palette that can be used while painting. It has 8 small wells for creating and blending colors which are included as a large tray of paints in metal tubes. So with paints, pallet, paper, and brushes (that hold water in the handle like a fountain pen) there are a lot of bits and bobs to track.But my wife loves it, and it gives her something to pack along on hikes and such where we always wish we had time to stop and paint.
