Don't waste your money on cheap nut files, and certainly not on the fake nut files that are really welding torch tip cleaners. Yup I tried the cheap stuff and had to do the superglue and baking soda trick to fill and start over. :[ These work well and easily. Like anyone who's tried them, you've got go just a bit at a time. These cut quickly in bone or composites. The results are so worth it.

A must have for doing nut work on a guitar. Much better than the cheapy chinese files that come in little sets. If you don't want to shell out for a full set of files get the smallest one, it can be used on larger slots (but not vice versa). Gentle filing of nut slot can eliminate the weird sitar sound that can sometimes develop. Overall great product and should last a long time.

Purchased this to clean up a nut on an import guitar and it worked as needed.

These are very well made and super easy to use but be really careful or you'll over do it.I only had one string that really needed to be lower at the nut on my new Yamaha FG800J. The B string had about .026" clearance at the first fret. The spec I was using was .016" so I was aiming for .018" just to leave a little margin for error. The first 3 light strokes took off about .005". An additional 2-3 more very light strokes took the clearance down to .016". Those last strokes were with less pressure and I expected to need a little more off but I didn't. So I'm happy with the results. Even if I had overdone it, the fault would have been mine and not the file. I barely saw any material coming out of the slot but it's a little space that the material was being removed from.I'm a beginner guitar player with only about 5 weeks of experience and lowering this one stray string made it a little easer to fret the B string in the first fret as required for the infamous F chord.

I had my strat setup for 10-52 gauge guitar strings, and when receiving my guitar back, I wasn't quite satisfied with how my D string sat in the nut. Instead of taking it back, I decided to purchase this tool to see if I could fix the problem myself. Within seconds I was able to rectify the string-sitting situation. Great tool for filing guitar nuts.

This worked as described and fixed a 0.010 nut issue I had. I'm grateful for that. My only complaint is how expensive it is. But then again, you get what you pay for. If I have to buy another gauge, I might consider buying an entire kit.

Being a beginner/intermediate uke player, my uke collection grows every year as I explore different tunings, sizes, and brands. Unless you hit the uke jackpot, most new ukes require setup to adjust the action of the strings to suit the player, otherwise the uke can be frustrating to play, especially at the lower frets. My preference is to set the string height, in freedom units, between 5/64 to 6/64†at the 12th fret and between 2.5/64†to 3.5/64†at the first fret, making the uke comfortable to play without risk of buzzing. There are many good videos on YouTube that provide guidance on how to lower the action of the strings so don’t be afraid to tackle this job. In the event of an epic failure … replacement nuts are cheap and you've chocked up yet another learning experience in life. Anyways, if you find the action at the 1st fret still too high after sanding the saddle to dial in the height at the 12th fret, the next step is to carefully file the slots in the nut at a slight angle down towards the headstock, taking frequent measurements with a string height gauge. For this task I recommend MusicNomad’s diamond coated files. Sure, there are cheaper options available but nothing is more frustrating than buying cheap low-quality tools that make the task at hand more arduous than necessary. I bought three MusicNomad files (0.024â€, 0.028â€, and 0.036â€) and these were sufficient to file the nut slots on my concert and tenor ukes. The diamond coating makes it really easy to cut through bone fret nuts. If necessary, the file can easily be removed from the yellow plastic handle by flicking off the handle’s end cap and sliding the file out of the handle. And yes, the file’s size is laser-etched on the file so you always know what size it is. In the end, it takes me about a 1/2 hour to file the four slots in a bone uke nut, with most of that time spent measuring string height, tuning the uke, playing tunes to test the action, and of course, enjoying a good beer. Kudos to MusicNomad for their quality products!

Ideal little tool. Easy to use. No need to take any strings off. Just need to loosen whichever string you need to move. Hold the string to one side and the file will do the job. The small handle on it ensures that the file is a nice fit in any string slot.
