I needed the metal place, as I had an exposed junction box underneath a larger, non programmable thermostat. I secured the metal plate with the existing screws from the old thermostat and the Nest thermostat connected right up to the larger piece and I think it looks better than I expected based on prior reviews. Two thumbs up!

Was able to use the backplate and install on the current thermostat opening.

when assembling, it would be assumed that the plate edges would taper towards the wall and sit flush but the instructions actually instruct to have the plate taper forwards, away from the wall which is strange. If you reverse the plate, the screw heads will collide with the plate and prevent it from sitting flush. And the plastic imprints would be facing forward. Bottom line, this plate is functional but doesn't look right.

not really sure why we even had to find a wall plate cover; after investing in the Nest thermostat - of course; there was no info that it wasn't included - or perhaps it was small print - no matter; why wouldn't it all be included in one unit? but we found this online and decided it would work - well; the materials used to mold/make the wall plate are VERY cheap looking - and this is the reason why we are returning it. Don't recommend - I'd suggest shopping around for a better quality product
