Used it a few days after receiving it in a tight spot to solder. Highly recommend it.

I am a retired firefighter and I have witnessed several people burning their houses down while doing simple DIY projects. I bought one of these Newtex heat-resistant pads a couple years ago when I started doing a few plumbing projects around the house. I have used the pad several times and it does have a few "toasted" areas on it - but no holes or severely charred areas. I have another project in the works, that requires protection on two sides and the single pad cannot cover both - so I just ordered a second pad.I am very happy with the performance of my first Newtex pad. Some other reviews complain that the pad gets a little burnt - yah, but it saved the house. It is an inexpensive, sacrificial, piece of fabric. Use little nails or something to hold it as far away from the flame as possible to reduce charring.Fifteen bucks is money well spent vs burning down your house.

A must for removing/sweating soldered fittings in tight areas. It does prevent heat damage.

It definitely works, but after maybe a dozen times using it, it's got some holes and it's getting brittle. It's still a good product, but I plan to try some others that my coworkers have said good things about.

This product is fiberglass with vermiculite coating, and is made in the USA by a company the supplies to industry and military. Tested with a propane torch simulating soldering of a copper tee in a wall space. A small amount of off-gassing and a light odor and the material darkened (from tan to dark gray), but physical integrity unchanged,. No concern using it in close quarters like a wall space. Performed same test on a "carbon" type mat from other Amazon supplier (apparently Chinese) and it resulted in obvious smoke and flames. That mat curled from the heat but did not melt or disintegrate. No way I'd use the carbon mat in an enclosed space.

Prevented fire but allowed the wood to be charred, after one project mat totally destroyed and useless, had to throw away, better off buying a better product.

I'm a plumber and use this product all the time for when I have to Solder in close proximity to flammable materials (drywall-insulation). Does the job as expected and outlasts some other products I've tried. Quality of material is similar to a real welding blanket.

I used it for brazing inside refrigerator cabin, to protect liner, it burns easily.
