Although it may seem trivial, putting a good dovetail for your chuck to take hold of is a major part of getting your turning solidly on the lathe so you can go to work. This chisel does an excellent job!!

Cut perfect dovetails for the nova chuck when I turned a set of bowls a couple weeks ago. Like it better than anything else I have tried.

I have a nova lathe and supernova chucks. I had read several reviews critical of this tool as being useless because you could do the same thing with a skew. Well maybe you can but I'm pretty new to this and figured having a tool that makes the perfect dovetail for my jaws would be worthwhile. The problem with this thing is there are absolutely no instructions with it. There are numbers on the face of the tool, no idea what those are for (I'm pretty sure they a for measuring the width of your recess, but without instructions who knows :-). There's also nothing I can find on Nova's website. I stumbled across a video on YouTube by a good tuner who goes by the handle "Robo Hippy" and he was using the tool and he taught me a lot about using it. Search for "MOUNTING BOWL BLANKS: RECESS, TENON & FACEPLATE" by Robo Hippy and you will see a gouge very similar to this one in use.Overall I like the results. Bowls are very secure on my Supernova chuck but I'm really hoping someone from Nova reads this and realizes a short video would be really helpful.

Perfect for what I needed. Makes reflect dovetails for my Nova chuck. Yes I could just use a parting tool and eyeball it but why do that when a tool designed for that purpose exists.

This chisel lets you easily create dovetails of the right size and the right angle to let your NOVA chuck grip the best.Along the side are marking for the center and for 50mm and 100mm chuck jaws. Just make your dovetail as wide as you need by comparing to the marks on the tool already in your hands.The primary feature is that it lets you make the dovetail of the exact angle that provides the most contact surface for the best hold possible.It's a scraper, so using it is easy. Place it flat on the tool rest, and square. No strange angles needed. This makes it easy.
