About this item

  • Fresh green foliage reaches 8 to 12 feet tall, topped by long, thick dusty-pink "feather dusters" that bloom in late-summer and last for months! Pampas ornamental grass can be a very attractive and functional plant when used correctly in the landscape. It can be used as a specimen plant in isolated locations on large lawns.
  • Pampas grass grows in USDA zones 7 - 10 as an 8 - 12 foot tall perennial grass.
  • Because it grows very rapidly into a massive plant, pampas grass is an excellent screening plant for sunny locations. Unsurpassed for glorious texture and color in the landscape, this pink Pampas Grass is the star of any garden it graces!
  • In selecting sites for pampas grass, regard should be paid to the danger of damage to passersby from contact with the very sharp edges of the leaves. Pampas grass should be planted where it will receive full sun most of the day.
  • Sow 5 seeds per plant. Pampas grass should be planted where it will receive full sun most of the day. It will grow very slowly and usually will not produce plumes when grown in shady areas.

Pampas Grass Bloom Colors, Heights, and Seasons

Reaching an impressive 80 inches, pampas grass adds dramatic vertical accents to gardens. Its elegant plumes, available in pink, silver-white, and mixed hues, bloom from late summer to fall. Pampas grass is one of the largest ornamental grasses, so it’s important to plant it in a spacious area with full sun. It thrives in well-drained soil, especially during fall and winter. To maintain its beauty, remove brown, dead foliage in late winter or cut the entire plant back to about 2 feet from the ground. Since the grass blades are sharp, use caution when pruning.

Pink and White Pampas Grass in Full Bloom

To grow Pampas grass from seeds, you can start indoors by filling a seed tray with well-draining, pre-moistened soil. Place the seeds on top, gently press them in, and keep the soil moist until they sprout. Transplant seedlings into larger pots before moving them outdoors. Alternatively, you can sow 5 seeds directly in the garden after the last frost by preparing a loose, well-worked soil bed, pressing the seeds in, and keeping them moist. During the first year, regular watering is essential, but once established, Pampas grass becomes drought-tolerant. Plumes typically appear after 2–3 years.

Not sure what methods the people having germination issues were using on these seeds but 100% of mine have germinated. I used a mix of coco coir, earthworm castings, and potting soil and put in my seedling pots that have their own humidity domes then thoroughly with rain water. I then put a pinch of seeds in each one of my little pots on top of the soil as directed and left on my front porch in an area that gets direct sun most of the day. Within two weeks, all have sprouted! When they get a little more size to them I'll be putting in the ground.

I bought these seeds because they are native to our area. They literally grow on the side of the freeway, in fields nobody is maintaining, and on the side of cliffs. But after trying lots and lots of times to get them to work, all of our efforts have been futile. I can get them to grow in seed pods but after they reach the size that they need to go into the ground, they die. I wish these seeds came with tricks and tips for success. Mine came in a plain envelope with no helpful info.

Disappointing. I really wanted these so I really was super careful with them. Overall I probably got about 8 seeds to sprout but 4 died very quickly. I'm continuing to baby the surviving four. If they grow healthy, I'll update.
