I ordered (I believe) 3 of these to seed where the road department did major road road and planted wheat. I prefer Fescue and it was easier to order this online instead of going somewhere like Lowes. the packaging is very nice and did not allow for any seeds to "leak" out. It germinated very quickly and seems to be good seed.

I really like this grass for the shady spots on my lawn where the zoysia won't overtake or the St Augstine either. It survived the San Antonio summer in the shady spots and did pretty good against the winter annuals coming in. Winter annuals are pretty invasive here so you need a lot of density to choke out their seeds. I will say that I always had terrible results with seed germination before I started laying down peat moss, like 0-10% germination. So I buy 2.2 compressed peat moss in roughly a 2 peat moss to 1 grass seed ratio and I get excellent germination. I don't bucket soak at all. I till the ground and then lay out a pre mixed grass seed and peat moss mixture, use my tamper (I supposed you could just step on it) and then water daily until I need to mow it. I figure its 40 dollars for peat moss and 30 for seed and that is equal to about 800 dollars and 8,000 lbs of sod if you install it yourself. Care instructions are about the same for sod and seed anyways. Use peat moss, plant in shady spots and this seed will serve you well. I would guess it won't invade the sunny parts of your yard so there will just be a little competition where light is 6-8 hours of the day.

Slowest germinating grass I ever bought. 3 weeks later after daily watering it sprouted in less than 1% of what I put down. Seems like very old seed. Update; 4th week and now about an inch high and filled in quite well.

It said these had high growth rates and would be quick. I honestly can say that's not true. I didn't want to give it zero stars because I eventually did have grass that grew but I'm not even sure if it had anything to do with these seeds.

Overall, the product worked. Did it do as good as the more expensive seed? No, it did not. But in terms of getting decent coverage at a cheap price, it was great. I did have to significantly oversee though And water for an hour a day for the first week and a half to two weeks. After that time, the grass started to takeoff. Overall, for the price, I am very happy. Don’t expect it to be like high-end sod farm seed. There’s going to be seeds that have lacking germination. But if you rake it in, aerate, Fertilize, cover it with some straw It will work. Just make sure you’re mindful of the temperature for tall fescue. It seems to be a seed that is very picky on outside temp and soil temp. Do it at the correct time of year and follow the instructions and you’ll get results.

After I bought this I did some more research & found out that Kentucky 31 is NOT the grass you want for a lawn. It's not soft to walk on (pets or people), it's stalky & light green (not thick, dark green), tough grass blades dull your mower blades & is very difficult to eradicate from your soil if you change your mind (one user claims it took 10 years to get it gone!). You're going to do all the hard work preparing your ground for grass & watering daily for two weeks anyway, so spend a few bucks more for nice, quality lawn grass, such as Scott's Black Beauty, not this.
