About this item

  • This variety, Moonlight, has blooms that are a soft yellow. It is very attractive to hummingbirds! They grow quickly and have blooms from summer through fall. Nasturtium will grow anywhere as an annual but will be a perennial only in frost-free climates.
  • Nasturtium is a 60 - 80 inch climbing vine which grows as an annual in USDA zones 3 - 10.
  • It is a climbing vine, so be prepared to give it a structure to climb as soon as it’s a few inches in height. Nasturtium is a companion plant for the vegetable garden. The peppery tasting leaves are said to keep away unwanted insects.
  • Nasturtium seed is large and it has a hard seed coat. It requires a 24 hour soak in water or to file the seed gently to break the coat open. Nasturtium does not always transplant well, so many gardeners start the seed directly outdoors in spring.
  • Sowing Rate: 1 - 2 seeds per plant. Prepare a seedbed by loosening and weeding the soil. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 68F, germination normally occurs within 10 days. Space the plants 8 - 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. Nasturtium is usually resistant to deer.

Delightful Climber!

Nasturtium plants feature abundant, rich blossoms which make for lovely decorations when they climb up structures!

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum Lobbianum Moonlight)

Nasturtium is a very useful annual that is very familiar to most gardeners. This climber is one of the best plants for covering fences or walls when given some strings or brush to climb on. The plant creates a very pleasing effect when grown amongst shrubs that it can climb over. As the nasturtium vine grows it attaches to the bushes, climbing over or through them, and the lovely flowers spill out making a charming display. Bloom time is mid-summer through first frost.

Climbing nasturtiums do best when left alone. They will tolerate most any soil type, but prefer not to be fertilized. Keep watered, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Tropaeolum Lobbianum grows just as well as Tropaeloum Majus! The foliage is somewhat smaller, but it produces flowers in great profusion.

How to Grow

Nasturtiums prefer a location with full sun in cooler climates. However, for the hottest climates, they prefer an area that will have afternoon shade. Nasturtiums grow as perennials in frost-free regions.

Nasturtium seeds have a tough outer shell, so it is best to soak them overnight in warm water before sowing. The seeds can be planted directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

If planting outdoors, sow at a depth of 1/2 inch in prepared soil that has been worked until it is fine and light. Make sure to keep seeds moist until germination. They will germinate in 7-10 days, and flower 7-11 weeks after germination.

Unfortunately for me only 5 out of 50 of these seeds that I ended up planting actually germinated. Such a bummer as I’ve purchased seeds from this seller before & they truly are a good little company. Don’t know why they didn’t come up as I’ve been a gardener for 35 yrs & no first timer here lol. I’ll try again & will continue to purchase other seeds from this seller as they usually are successful planting’s!

Very unhappy customer. I have a small greenhouse business and I started several hundred nasturtiums this year. Not a single Moonlight seed came up. I used the same soaking method, same soil, same greenhouse... the same shelf even. The other varieties came up and look great. The not a single one of the Moonlight variety came up. I was sceptical because most of the seeds were missing the outer husk but I though maybe the producers knew something I didn't about germinating nasturtiums. I am not sure what caused them to not come up, but they didn't. Now it is too late to restart them and have them ready for my Mother's Day opening.I bought several other varieties from Outside Pride that had very few seeds germinate, but at least a couple came up. They too had many seeds without the outer shell. I will not likely buy nasturtium seeds from them again. The other plant varieties I purchased from them did much better.

I purchased these last year but didn't have any success. They sprouted and quickly died but I chalked it up to late planting and held on to them until this year.Good germination and I'm finally getting some blooms. It's not showing any signs of vining though.Still beautiful flowers.
