Product Description

This heavy duty planer offers performance and value, loaded with standard features not found on other machines in its class. The powerful 5HP motor and 20" planing capacity will handle the most demanding work. The helical cutterhead provides quieter operation and finer finishing than conventional systems, and the 100 four-sided carbide knife inserts seat themselves without requiring a set-up gauge. The 5" dust port connects easily to any dust collector. The anti-kickback fingers and pressure bar are located in close proximity to the cutterhead for an exceptional finish. The solid cast iron base, table and head are designed for production. The 2-speed oil bath gearbox transmits full power to feed rollers and facilitates fast speed changes at 24 and 31 FPM. The gearbox can be changed to 4-speed with the included gear to run lower speeds of 16 and 20 FPM. The corrugated infeed and fine groove outfeed rollers ensure a smooth feed. The precision ground and polished cast iron table rides on four steel columns giving it plenty of support for the larger workpiece. Heavy cast iron extension wings ensure a flat, smooth cut.

Featuring robust construction, a powerful motor, precision cut-depth adjustments and the legendary Byrd helical cutterhead, the Five-Horsepower, Three-Phase, 230-/460-Volt Powermatic 1791316 209HH Planer with Byrd Cutterhead sets the standard for modern planers. It accurately dimensions wood with parallel faces and produces an ultra smooth, tear-out-free surface, making it ideal for any serious woodworker.

Performance and Value
Capable of 3/32-inch-deep cuts on most stock widths, the 209HH comes with many standard features not found on other machines in its class.

Built atop a fully enclosed, welded-steel base cabinet, it's equipped with a powerful five-horsepower, three-phase, 230-/460-volt, TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor mounted within the cabinet to provide 20-inch planing capacity. Three V-belts running on precision-machined, multi-groove pulleys ensure smooth power transmission, while a built-in locking-caster system makes moving the 801-pound 209HH easy, and keeps it stable during use.

Byrd Helical Cutterhead
Despite carrying the helical moniker, many cutterhead designs retain many of the liabilities of the long-blade designs. In contrast, the 209HH uses a Byrd cutterhead, which is second to none in terms of efficiency, produced surface quality, and long-lived cutting inserts.

The Byrd cutterhead is so effective because its 99 carbide inserts are arranged in spiral-shaped rows, have a four-inch radius ground into them, and are mounted so that they approach the wood at a 14-degree angle. The result is a true shear cut that dramatically reduces impact and the resulting fiber-disturbance other cutterhead designs deliver. The 209HH is also very quiet during operation.

Feeds and Rollers
The planer has two material-feed rate ranges with four actual speeds: 24/31 feet per minute for rough dimensioning and 16/20 feet per minute with gear change for an ultra-smooth surface. A simple push/pull knob on the side easily controls the feed rates, as well as a chain and sprocket that allow you to change to a second set of feed rates.

Safe, Dependable Design
For dependability, a serrated steel infeed roller and a smooth steel outfeed roller--each precisely set at the factory--include user-accessible adjustments to keep the 209HH tuned for years to come. For enhanced operator safety, there's a row of closely spaced anti-kickback fingers under the infeed side of the cutterhead housing. They automatically engage the wood as it enters the cutterhead and help prevent it from being kicked out. Also, the top rollers make moving long stock for another cut easy and safe.

Durable, Stable Construction and Dust Collection
The 209HH is built to last, with a solid cast-iron base, table, and head, and a precision-ground and polished cast-iron, 20- x 25-1/2-inch (W x D) table that rides on four steel columns--plenty of support for large workpieces. And heavy cast-iron extension wings ensure a flat, smooth cut.

To help maintain a cleaner, healthier work environment, there's a five-inch dust port that connects easily to any dust collector.

The 209HH is backed by a five-year warranty.

What's in the Box
209HH Planer; one dust hood; two cast-iron extension tables; one handwheel; one handle; one low-speed gear kit; two hardware bags; one owner's manual; and one warranty card.

I ordered through a Amazon retail partner or whatever they call them. It arrived crushing the pallet it was on like others noted, but it otherwise appeared fine. This morning I noticed a crack opened up along the top edge of the base at the corner. They didn't tack weld the base together correctly so you can see all the way through. This is not the gold standard I expected. I will be making a warranty call come Monday. And will update as this progresses. The day after my post here: The retailer got back to me this morning, and is working the issue with their Powermatic rep. I got word of this after I was able to get through to Powermatic's 800 technical service number on my second attempt. I then immediately received a form asking for my details, the unit's serial and stock number, and was request to send the photos I've attached to this review. So far each appears responsive.

This thing is great. Our business is in high quality wooden boat restorations. We did a comparable job on this machine as the one we did on our old one and the time was 2 hours as opposed to 8 hours. The feed is fast and the cutting is accurate not to mention that is it much quiter that the old machine. We highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

After assembling and using this planer, I realized that Powermatic, Jet, and Grizzly are all exactly the same machine, just painted a different color. It's like the difference between a Geo Prism and a Toyota Corolla. Except for the paint and name plates, you can't tell the difference and all the internal parts are fully interchangeable. What that tells me is that there is only one factory in China making these things so the only diffence is which marketing department is going to get a slice of your money on it's way to China. Grizzly takes a significantly smaller slice...Politics of outsourcing and corporate profit margins aside, this is still a very well made piece of machinery that does a fantastic job of turning rough boards into smooth boards or thick boards into thin boards. One note of caution if you plan on planing a lot of boards: Don't skimp on your dust collector system! This machine with the Byrd Shelix head can fill a 55 gal barrel in 30 minutes with fluffy little curls of wood shavings. If you try using one of those little $300 1hp dust collectors you will spend more time empying the bucket than you will planing wood.Since this review is for the 3-phase version, I think it's fitting to make a comment on the electrical requirements for connection. The manual calls for a 30 amp 3-phase connection so I bought a 30 amp breaker and ran a new dedicated circuit with 10 gauge wire and a L14-30 outlet all according to proper NEC standards. Since a review of the 1-ph version of this machine mentioned that these don't come with a power cord at all, I was ready for that and bought a heavy duty 10-4 power cord and the appropriate plug for my new socket. Then I discovered the input wires into the planer are only 14 gauge! This prompted me to pull the cover and look under the hood to see why I just spent a small fortune on 10 gauge wire if it only needed 14. The motor name plate lists 230v amp draw at 14 amps, which is just below the 15 amp max capacity of 14 gauge wire. I don't think you really need a 30 amp circuit. 20 would be fine for the 3-phase motor. I backed this up with some engineering math too. Having said that, I should also mention that the engineering math DOES support needing a 30 amp circuit for the 1-phase version of this machine. Bottom line here: 30 amps is more than adequate capacity for 3-phase 230v and just right for 1-phase 230v.
