Three weeks ago, while hiking down a steep slope in the Sierras, I tripped on a root and plunged forward down the slope, head first into the huge boulders. I was using my dad's old, telescoping hiking stick, and when I tried to stop my fall, it telescoped and I fell. Ended up with a concussion, badly bruised shoulder, elbow, knees and a bone bruise on my hip. I was lucky to be alive after striking my head full force on the boulder. After I got home from the trip, I searched for a hiking pole that I could lean on with all my weight when needed, without it telescoping. That's when I found these Z-style hiking poles. They are perfect and can support weight without telescoping, and are lightweight, easy to set up or break down for storage. They are also beautiful. I am still limping and recovering from the fall, but went to a local museum and also a local hiking trail, this week, and the poles supported me on both steep trail and on steep stairways at the museum. I highly recommend these hiking poles to anyone. They are also beautiful and have a clean look, without the big plastic joints that telescoping poles come with, and the longer handle is great for not only walking, but getting up from sitting on the ground. I am a fisherman and photographer so I go into the wild regularly and these poles will never leave my side.

I haven’t been able to field test these poles yet and, when I do, it’ll be under flat sub-tropical and tropical terrain. It’s hoped they will last long enough to be tested under mountainous geography in a year or so. I, however, have no reason to fear that they won’t last as they seem phenomenally good for the price point. Aesthetically, these poles are as attractive as any other in the market, while mostly keeping a basic black and white color palette. It features what seems to be reliable and sturdy cork trekking handles, with a foam handle under them. Both appear to be of excellent quality. The handles feel very comfortable in my short but wide hands. There are no concerns with the hard-plastic tips of the handles. The straps, prominently displaying the nicely embroidered company brand, have soft wicking material inside, are pretty thick, and compare favorably with any from other more expensive poles out there. They are secured into the top hard-plastic section of the handles by a small plastic plug that’s part of the straps themselves rather than the handle tops. One simply has to pull the plug out for strap adjustments. The ease of adjustment, though, is worrisome as it might come out easily while using them. You have to push that sucker in quite hard to secure the strap back after adjustments. This might very well be a non-issue, like I said, I haven’t field tested them yet, but best to be aware of it beforehand. They are made of aluminum 7075, don’t feel heavy at all, unless you are looking for feather-weight poles, which can’t be made of this material. The adjustment range of the top portion of the shaft is clearly marked and it’s quite generous. The adjustment knobs require little effort, solid, work fast and well. It comes with all the goodies for all terrains, a fine bag and they pack small. The company behind them is a small one quite adept at creating a true sense of community around its customers with superb customer service. I purchased two pairs, another for my wife, who is 2.5 inches taller than me, but the poles can accommodate us both (I’m 5’6.5” and she’s 5’9”) and we are giddily anticipating breaking them in… Well, not breaking them… you know what I mean, do you?

You can spend a lot of $$ on outdoor gear. BUT after extensive research I realized there are brands out there (like Hiker Hunger) that offer well-made, high quality, durable gear for half the cost of some other brands.I studied a few comparable options (Foxelli, TheFitLife, and Trekology) and here is why I chose to purchase my Aluminum Trekking Poles from Hiker Hunger.Cork handles:Cork handles are my jam! They are moisture-resistant and very comfortable overall. If my hands get sweaty, they don’t slipExtremely strong 7075 aluminum:I did not know much about the different types of aluminum out there, but soon realized that 7075 is the strongest and lightest aluminum for trekking poles on the market. I know many long distance hikers care about weight saved with carbon fiber poles, but I appreciate the strength of these poles rather than saving a few extra ounces on weight. These are definitely some of the strongest poles I’ve tried and you can tell how well-made they are right when you take them out of the package.Lever lock that is easy to adjust and holds well:I have never been a fan of the twist locking poles...they just don’t seem as reliable during a hike. Hiker Hunger uses lever locks with a metal thumb adjuster (unlike other brands who use require a screwdriver to tighten).Replaceable accessories & pole sections:Although the tip of the pole is not replaceable, Hiker Hunger did say they are more than willing to send replacement sections and have a great warranty policy.Family run company, based in the US:Emily & Rory (I feel like I know them through their emails and photos on their website) have started a great family run company. I’ve called the number on their website and someone actually answers! I’ve sent in a few emails, when I had some questions for them and Lani responded within 24 hours. Anyway, I think it’s absolutely great that hikers have started their own outdoor gear brand and are passionate about their products and their community.

Nice looking, strong and quick to unfold, or fold. I’m 190lb, and I can put my weight on each one and they can take it.

They are solid and easy to use. I like the way they collapse as well. I’m taking them to Portugal next week where I plan on using them on our daily walks and hikes.

Do everything they should, come with many feet. Fold to comfortable length. Light. Like the wrist band.

So far I am very impressed with these poles. They are extremely: easy to use, portable, light, and have worked well for what I have used them for. The rubber attachments for the bottoms work well, and are easy to put on, and take off. They also work fine on sidewalks. I'm used them in ice, and snow. With Snowshoes, micro spikes, and just hiking boots. The snow basket attachments are easy to put on, and take off. They are very easy to set up or put back in the bag they came in. I've only used the cork grips, and straps, and they work well. I'm 5 foot 6 so I use them at the 120 cm mark. I got the smaller version because I'm way under 5 feet 9, and they are more compact at that size. The spikes at the bottom work well for the conditions I've used them for. A taller person might want to consider the bigger version if you want to use the rubber grips (not that you need to). The bag works great as well (I can fit my micro spikes in there as well). I plan to use them this spring, and summer including when I'm hiking MT Olympus in Greece this June.
