Product Description

Scotch-Brite(TM) Multi-Finishing Wheel, Medium Grit (Pack of 1)

From the Manufacturer

The 3M Scotch-Brite Multi-Finishing Wheel is a convolute-constructed wheel that provides cleaning and final finishing for stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and other metals.

Produces #3 or #4 finishes on stainless steel Convolute wheel runs smoothly over lifetime of product Conformability helps produce consistent finishes Available in range of sizes & grades

Conformable and Cool
The combination of mineral grades and soft density make the wheel well suited for final finishing applications where a high degree of conformability and less density are needed to produce #3 or #4 finishes on stainless steel and other metals on curved, contoured, and flat surfaces. The Multi-Finishing Wheel runs cool and resists loading due to its open-web construction, reducing the risk of part discoloration and warping, while extending the life of the wheel. Scotch-Brite™ material is wound around a core, which creates a balanced wheel that runs smoother than a non-convolutely constructed wheel. The Multi-Finishing Wheel is available in coarse, medium, and fine grade abrasive.

Abrasive Mineral
The Scotch-Brite™ Multi-Finishing Wheel uses silicon carbide abrasive. Silicon carbide is a synthetic mineral that is very sharp and commonly used for low-pressure applications such as paint prep. While it breaks down faster than aluminum oxide, it produces a superior finish.

The Non-Woven Difference
Scotch-Brite™ industrial abrasives are unique surface conditioning products with abrasives incorporated into non-woven nylon or synthetic fibers. Combining abrasives with the fibers creates an abrasive system that delivers consistent results for the life of the product. The open-web material runs cool and is load resistant, which keeps the abrasive minerals cutting at high performance by limiting clogging of the fibers.

I have used tons of Scotchbrite finishing wheels for well over a decade. Stainless steel and bronze and aluminum fine metal work, large public sculptures. Up to now my favorite was the EXL 2A Medium, which I get mostly in 6" x 1/2" wheels. Extremely versatile, can use the edge or the face like a 6" sandin disc. Even use them on a random orbit sander instead of sandpaper. But I needed a wider wheel for a brush or grain finish. 1" is about right for getting good bite while being wide enough. Sometimes I stack a number of wheels for a very wide surface but it's harder to get good pressure, it's more for final surfacing to get broad surfaces even. A single 1" wide wheel gets the bulk of the middle finishing, can do some light stock removal, but still give a nice end finish close to final, and this is as good as it gets, a good balance between removal and a fine finish. I usually end up with a Red Very Fine scotchbrite ball wheel and then hand pads after this. Also a nice balance between soft and hard. These last a very long time so I don't mind paying the price. I still would like something more aggressive because I still have to use a 7" disc initially on plate, but have not found that in a scotchbrite wheel yet.

Amazing!! Removes corrosion, carbon deposits, gunk, and leaves a quality finish behind. You can use this as your first step in the buffing process. Look at the results of my exhaust pipes that almost junked (one on right side not buffed yet- for comparison). This wheel brought life back to my old motorcycle parts.

Wheel gives a great finish, but it is not durable at all. Wheel practically falls apart if you are finishing a surface that is not flat/smooth.

The Scotch Brite Wheel MU-WL does a great job removing rust and smaller imperfections. Would definitely recommend.

Imagine a 1 inch thick extra stiff Scotch Brite pad that is round and mounts on a buffer or grinder - That is what you get. The wheel is considerably denser than your kitchen Scotch Brite pad. It does a good job of removing rust, paint, or doing the first steps in polishing metal. It does not require polishing abrasives with use - the abrasives are built into the wheel.I noticed on one side a painted direction arrow, so it appears that it is made to go just one way - of course you turn it over as required to get the rotation correct. The wheel has a 1 inch mandrel hole. If you have a buffer or grinder with a smaller shaft you will need an adapter. I used a stack of nylon spacers from Home Depot that were 1 inch OD by 1/2 inch ID to fit my grinder.

I am maintaining aircraft, and these wheels are a must any sheet metal work to de-burr the edges. I also do TIG and PULSED MIG welding on structural Aluminum, and use these to de-burr all of the cut edges and prep for welding. When used carefully so as NOT to gouge or taper the wheel, they last a long time. They do an incredible job of both de-burring and polishing. They are also great for polishing steel tools that have rusted.
