I’m really happy with the upgrade. This new gate lock is extremely sturdy and well-made, greatly improving security and offering peace of mind. Installation was quick and easy, and it fit perfectly with the existing setup. The flip latch works great and is very comfortable to use. We love that it can rest in a couple of positions, and the simple design is very effective. The way the two pieces fit together ensures that when closed, the lock can’t be pulled apart by the wind, unlike pin or bolt-style locks. The best feature is the solid build quality. Unlike the old lock that bent easily, this one feels robust and durable, holding up to daily use with no signs of wear or damage. The locking mechanism operates smoothly, keeping the gate securely closed but still easy to open with the key.

My side gate had a similar but much less sturdy latch that would fail to actually latch unless you fiddled with the pull cord. It would work sometimes, but not others. I don't like latches that are unreliable, so after a search I found the Hillmaster and it is exactly what I was looking for. The construction quality is great, the instructions are very good, but it's the little features that make this unit stand out. First, the return spring makes the latch clasp move into the shut position with just the right amount of force. The brass pivot with set screw keeps the pull cord (which is vinyl coated, so it moves through the hole in the 4x4 easily) from binding up. The clasp is smoothly machined and painted so the gate arm can overcome gravity and the strength of the clasp spring so the gate closes every time with an easy motion.There is one thing I'd suggest to Hillmaster, and that is to make the mount for the arm have elongated mounting holes so it can be adjusted up or down later as the gate sags. Other than that, nothing but full marks for this latch, it's so nicely implemented.

The Hillmaster self-locking gate latch is a great new or replacement solution for vinyl and wooden gate/fence post applications. Installation is quick and easy. Just line up the two main pieces, drill pilot holes, and screw into place. I like that the one piece wraps around the post for additional screw points. My original did not, and was perpetually loosening up. In my case, I did use the included pull and spring, but needed to adapt them for a longer throw distance. One word of advice - if possible, use stronger screws, or back off the torque setting on the power drill/driver. The included screws look nice, but will break below the head at a surprisingly low torque level. Otherwise, once installed, the Hillmaster latch looks great and functions perfectly.

Needed a new gate latch and this worked perfectly. Had screws and felt like it was reasonably quality. Good value.
