I wanted a no-frills, accurate, easy-to-use, powerful drill press and that's what I found in the Shop Fox model W1680.I wanted the slowest rpm drill press and, indeed, it's one of the slowest affordable drill presses I could find, since I wanted to drill metal efficiently. There is no discernible runout (drill bit wobble). It's very easy changing belts for the various speeds (140-3050 rpm). No digital readout or unnecessary laser to malfunction; everything is mechanical and long-lasting. This drill press is well thought out by Woodstock and the Chinese executed it production well.Assembly was straight forward, but sliding the table arm bracket on to the column required removing the column ring which I couldn't do because the set screw in the column ring was impossible to loosen. I had to drill out the set screw, rethread or tap the hole and screw in a replacement. The chrome on the column ring flaked off in the process, but that was cosmetic an not a worry to me. I wouldn't let the possibility of a stuck set screw deter you from this baby. It's a great machine. I would definitely buy it again. Note: The headstock assembly is very heavy and takes two people to set on the column .

Sure, it's rough around the edges. But only where those "edges" don't really matter to its performance. Where it really does matter, it's spot-on and well built. It's every bit as well-built as my dad's 50 year old Craftsman.. Some might say that the method of manually adjusting speed on a drill press seems antiquated. But your belts will last a LOT longer this way. And you don't have all that rubber-dust getting everywhere.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? It has plenty of speed options too. I pretty much always run mine at the lowest speed, and it just powers through. And I can't even imagine a use-case where you'd need to go above it's highest speed setting.. The belts it comes with are actually decent too. No slippage or squealing. I do recommend picking up some adhesive-backed foam weather-stripping though, as the pulley enclosure is sheet-metal, and might need a little TLC to dial-down the noise. Not that mine was too loud. But, any tool can stand to be more-quiet than it already is. I do kinda wish it had a threaded spindle, to lock the arbor in. But, in this price-to-size-to-power range, it would unfair to take points off for the absence of those threads. I knew it didn't have them, before I bought it. And other solutions do exist.. Any task suited to a drill press, this machine will do with ease. Though, if you ask it to do something a drill press was never meant to do; well, that's on you I guess.. I absolutely would recommend this tool!

This drill press assembled without problem except the machine tool light didn’t work. Called tech support times two; to their credit, they answered promptly and tried to be helpful. I diagnosed the problem myself, the light bulb socket had never been fixed to a flange on the inside of the headstock. No way to get my hands in there to fix. Tech support’s only solution was to ship it back to Amazon (re crate up and haul 200# to freight???). Or wait 30 days until Amazon warranty expires and then contact shopfox(grizzly industrial) and they’d ship it. No local repairman available. So, they’d spend 400 bucks to return and ship again? Long story short…I took off the top plate off the headstock and was able fix the elec socket apparatus. Conclusion: I learned my lesson about online ordering of big machinery; don’t do it unless you can fix it yourself.

Was a little concerned when I saw them unloading it off the truck. Packaging was terrible and I thought parts would be missing. Everything was there and it was easy to assemble. The big nut on the driven pulley was loose so I would check it when assembling the unit. Make sure to check EVERYTHING when assembling. Very nice drill press.

Replaced my old drill press with the Shop Fox floor model and am pretty satisfied with it. I wanted the most heavy duty press I could buy that didn't need a 220 circuit to run on and I always try and buy the best when it comes to tools. The good. Seems pretty powerful with the 1HP motor. Good range of speeds with the belt system. The light that is sufficient for doing my work but I may upgrade to an LED in the future. The table is very easy to adjust. Operates smoothly and quietly with no rattles. The instructions were pretty straightforward and easy to follow. I would recommend studying up on more precise methods for attaching the chuck as I understand that it is critical for preventing runout. Seems overall to be well built and does what it is designed to do. The bad. It would be nice to have a dedicated place for the chuck key and also been nice to have a vertical lock for the chuck. The chuck guard was little more than something that was in the way so I removed it and have lived happily ever since. Overall I love this press and have built a table for it using some videos off of Youtube. It's so nice having a good drill press in the shop and I expect it will last longer than I will.

A fine piece of shop machinery. It will do all that I need and I love the quick height adjustment-wish I had it on my planer.

Not my first press to use, but first to own. Putting it together was simple, instructions we not great, but ok. When the package arrived it was a little beat up, but that's kind of expected with something of this size. Only some minor paint scratches, and one missing screw that holds the bit guard. I used it the next day after assembly, the unit is solid, strong and straight, what more can you ask for. Pretty happy with this purchase.
