The kit was a bit challenging for an 8 year old (he did not notice the flash on one gear)... but that's a good lesson for him to learn. Loved the idea that he can make several different (creatures?). Unfortunately, the solar cell requires LOTS of light to make the motor work. Might be best outdoors in the sunshine but will have to wait until summer to check that out.

I bought this for my 9 yr old great nephew and it was perfect for him as he is taking a stem course and is amazing at following instructions. However there are so many pieces that I’m not sure an average 9 year old wouldn’t be overwhelmed. A pair of pliers are suggested to cut the pieces apart, so I bought those separately. The toys work great once the solar panels are charged up!

Overall very fiddly and flimsy. Every little tab has to be sanded especially on gears or it won’t move. Only for very patient older kids. Solar panel only works in direct sunlight and gets stuck easily. The battery connections are also poor and it stops regularly. I do not recommend this product. (Sillbird has quick and helpful customer service and refunded the purchase)
