The box definitely looked like it had been kicked down some stairs, but the stand itself arrived in perfect condition. Of course the classic Vulcan-death-grip you see grizzled machinists use for one handed measurements still has it's place, but this stand is super convenient especially when you want to take repeated measurements along a part. If you're looking to make inspections easier this is a great tool. If you're working in a shop and want to check parts that are still fixtured you might need to keep stretching out your hands. 😉

The base is cast iron or similar. The jaws are a lightweight metal (zinc or aluminum?), and have reasonable rubber pads to hold a micrometer. There's a little slop in the jaws that makes the movable jaw wobble when it's loose, but I can't see that makes much difference. The jaws have a spring to make them separate on their own as you loosen them. The angle set is just pushing the fixed jaw against the interior side of the base with a bushing on the other side. It seems to work fine. There are three feet on the base which should prevent it from wobbling, but they're the same painted cast iron as the rest of the base; they'll definitely slip off you don't put some rubber feet on them yourself. It would be nice if the jaws were less wobbly, and it'd be nice if it came with rubber feet to stick on, but those are minor quibbles. There's nothing wrong with this at all.
