This is what I would describe as a "standard" awning design - an aluminum channel with telescopic "rafters" that mounts to the vehicle, a second similar channel with telescopic legs, and a polyester "canvas" top linking the two, with the whole thing enclosed in a heavy duty zippered PVC storage/transportation cover. The awning comes with a universal mounting kit - two sturdy L shaped mounting brackets, two U bolts, a more than ample quantity of stainless steel bolts in two different lengths, washers, "nyloc" nuts, wrench, guy lines with tensioners and stakes in two very nice, reusable "tie bags" made of matching "canvas", which I thought was an especially nice touch, and several pages of mounting instructions showing three or four different ways to mount the awning.I chose to "test mount" the awning on the roof cross bars of my 98 GV using nylon cable-ties to secure the supplied mounting brackets to the cross bars - test mount because the mounting system I plan to use will require me to cut the brackets and drill holes in my cross bars so that the awning can sit alongside my cargo basket, without being attached to the side of the basket itself.Mounting the awning should be a relatively simple task, the actual "degree of difficulty" will vary with the manner in which you choose to mount it on your particular vehicle, but if you were mounting it to a set of cross bars (say Yakima or Thule), it should take no more than half an hour to an hour, with the bulk of that time being spent securing the brackets to the cross bars - the awning mounts to the brackets using four bolts, two per bracket, the bolts slide into a channel on the back of the awning and can be moved sideways to position the awning exactly where you need it. Once the awning has been mounted, setting it up should take just a couple of minutes and can be done by one person, packing it away takes about twice as long, so maybe five minutes, and again one person can do it. Once the awning has been set up, I strongly suggest deploying the guy lines, a gust of wind from the right (or rather, wrong) direction will snatch this and wrap it over the vehicle roof, possibly breaking hinges or bending the channels.Construction quality is excellent, the aluminum channels are quite rigid, with very little flex, and the telescopic rafters and legs swing on sturdy cast metal (not plastic) hinges - the awning itself is polyurethane coated polyester, I wouldn't describe it as waterproof, but it should certainly keep light rain off of you, at least what doesn't blow in past the sides (rain rarely falls straight down, and almost always comes with wind), and the storage bag is heavy duty PVC.Smittybilt does not seem to market mosquito nets or extensions for their awnings but a quick look at the aluminum channels shows they have dual tracks or "keder" rails so that attaching an extension should be quite a simple task. I also plan to add an LED strip on at least the bottom of the channel that mounts to the vehicle for evening illumination.

Easy to install on my 99' Trooper. Offers great shade and a sturdy build. The guides at the bottom of the legs are a little thin so be mindful not to bend them. Held up in a stiff wind at Lake Powell and again at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Good enough for me to sleep under and light enough to setup solo. Pretty awesome little setup.

I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with a Kargo Master "Congo Cage" frame (approx 1 1/4" steel tube). The Smittybuilt 2787 (~6'x6') Awning fits perfectly between the cage's vertical legs. The box contained everything I needed, plus extra bolts and nuts which appear to be high quality stainless, but ?Installation on my setup was as simple as determining the position, wrenching on the u-bolts and L brackets to my cage, then hanging the self contained awning on the brackets...it took me about 20 minutes since I did not have to fabricate or modify anything on my vehicle. The L brackets could be installed pointing up or down; On my "un-lifted" stock suspension, I found the pointing up provided ampleoverhead space...I am 5'10"; pointing down would mean taller folks would have to stoop...the awning would be just slightly higher than height of the Jeep's roof. The instrux say to install the u-bolts with the nuts upwards; I am not sure why, however I did not want to have water pooling in them and causing corrosion so mounted them downwards. I also added a piece of foam window seal under the u-bolt to prevent it from slipping around the cage tube...after torqueing down the u-bolt, it feels like it is not going to move at all.To deploy the awning takes me literally two minutes (without the guy ropes). Unzip the cover and flip it back; unroll the awning; drop the legs from the outer frame, then extend the horizontal arms. Insert the arm pins into the outer horizontal frame, and extend the arms until the awning is taut. Adjust the leg heights as desired. Take down is just as quick, same steps in reverse. One thing I would look out for are the pins on the horizontal arms which insert into the outer horizontal frame. These pins are pretty thin aluminum and I already put a very slight bend into one when I first tried to set it up...the whole thing leaned/fell over before I could get the second arm in and slightly torqued the pin. I find that by really angling the legs towards the vehicle (like a lean -to) helps stabilize the awning until getting the second arm in. Once together, it is very stable/free standing. One can lower the outer edge a few inches, but if you want to really pitch the awning, like for rain, it works better to angle the legs towards the vehicle and tension with the guy ropes. Trying to simply lower the outer legs more than a few inches will put torque on the outer end arm pins and on the arm hinges on the vehicle end (which are horizontal axis only).Overall I am really pleased with this product; so pleased, in fact, that I am buying another one for the other side of the Jeep so I can have awnings on both sides :)

Received the awning unboxed and everything looked good. There was a bag with bolts and U bolt clamps but no “L” Brackets. This was a little frustrating so I order some brackets that didn’t really fit and needed to be drilled out to mount. I finally get the awning mounted and am ready to set it up for the first time. I unzip it and the mounts fall out of the bag!!This sets up pretty easy and looks great. I did it by myself and was fine but with two people it would be a breeze. I haven’t used it in any significant weather but I assume using the guy lines is going to be a must on heavy winds. Very good value for the price.

It was a good price, was easy to install and it is easy to setup and pack. Great addition for our car camping. Don't even need guylines as you can see on the photos.

Very happy with this purchase so far. Was easy to install (I had brackets that came with my rack however hardware is included with the awning as well as a decent amount of bolts and the tools needed to tighten them down)The awning is super easy to setup with two people. And while it can be done alone, until you get the hang of it it is super awkward and probably quite comical to anyone watching.I used 303 Aerospace Spray on it to help protect it from sun damage as well.

Easy to set up. A little cheap quality but for the price it is perfect.
