Bimetal thermometers operating below freezing must have a perfectly tight case to prevent entrance of moisture which eventually will condense and freeze inside the stem. For this reason it is important to avoid damage to the glass front.

I couldn't find any specs on Amazon or the manufacturer's website giving this very important info. BTW it is 1/2 npt not 1/4 npt which I searched for. Bad job Amazon and bad job Solimeta for your lack of info. The thermometer looked good just the wrong size.
