Prior to these cake testers, I had one prior stainless steel tester (it was MUCH thinner) and the ol' standard: toothpicks (wooden). I do a lot of baking, for family, friends, and for paying customers, so it's very important that my cakes are properly cooked. I often check doneness with both stainless steel and wooden toothpicks, but tend to rely more on what the toothpicks tell me. While I feel more comfortable with these testers than my previous stainless steel tester, it may be some time before I rely on them only.I feel like I can recommend this product, but not to any pro or semi-pro bakers.

The stainless steel cake tester for baking doneness is a great idea. I get tired of looking for a toothpick to test the doneness of my cake. I do not always have toothpicks available but these are in my drawer right next to my oven. Problem solved!

These are adorable cake testers! I love the cheery handles / tops, and how strong they are - they are very well made, and are not pointed to where you could hurt yourself. I much prefer these to toothpicks because you can use them over and over again without wasting your toothpicks (I put one down, lose it, go for another and repeat). These clean up easily too. Unfortunately they do have a rather big con to them though - the two cup cake topped testers are too thick. The black and white ones are fine but for some strange reason they decided to make the others more than twice the thickness. For me that means they probably won’t get used unless the others are unavailable. They would have been perfect had they all been the thin size of the other two. Since it affects half of the set, I am taking off two stars. They also claim that you can use these as “meat thermometersâ€. You can absolutely NOT use these as meat thermometers. Poke the meat and see inside with the thicker ones, probably, but there is no thermometer apparatus attached to these in any manner. As for breads, you test them by thumping them and listening for a hollow sound, and also by color, so the thicker ones would not really be good for that either. I am sad to give these a lower review, but since half the set is different in thickness (I personally don’t want a hole that big - while not tremendous, it is still much more obvious than the normal sized testers), you only have two workable testers when you were buying four. I hope the sellers / manufacturers take note and make the necessary changes (including the erroneous claim that you can use them as thermometers) as these would be a 5 star product for sure if they did!

This cake tester is a great alternative to toothpicks, and it’s perfect for ensuring I always have a reliable tool on hand. I rarely keep toothpicks available, so this ensures I'm never without a tester. As someone who bakes a lot and writes cookbooks, I consider this an essential tool in my kitchen!
