I've owned several of these over the years but they seem to grow legs often enough. They're well made, steel, and when you choose the correct size they fit just great and to not fall or work their way off the anvil in use. Recently I picked up a Fowler china-import mike (which is actually an excellent tool...) and needed a ball for it since I've primarily used Starrett models with larger anvils all my life. That one measures .256 so I thought this .250 would likely fit since they do have some give. Well, not enough to work. The recess below the clip ears is also precise so sizing with these needs to be pretty accurate. I was able to successfully "ream" it out using a 1/4" norton round that I dimpled the end of...worked out great and didn't scar the ball. Your other option for fitting most of these imported mikes is to search the Mitutoyo rubber ones if you can find the correct size, or look for the Fowler one that comes with a couple balls in a tube (Insize may have one as well). Starrett does make a 6.8mm metric version of this that would work but the ball size is also precisely metric which would be a hassle in use with an inch mike.

The product works great, the only reason I held back a star is the way they were shipped. The envelopes containing the micrometer balls were attached to a piece of cardboard with packing tape. The tape was over the labels on the envelopes and ruined the labels. I had to write the size back on by hand. Not that this is a problem but having a clear, printed label would be nice.

I bought one of these from another micrometer manufacturer and it was something like a 5 year old could make. It was a sloppy fit made out of rubber. The Starrett fits perfectly and is made with top quality. It also only took a couple days for it to arrive compared to about a month for the other companies product.Starrett is the best as far as I'm considered.

I work in an engine machine shop. The ball attachment works perfect for measuring inside radius to an outside surface. Important for getting accurate measurements!

We have several flat tip mics at work and needed to get another ball mic. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a new set of ball mics I thought I would try these. They fit good and seem to be repeatable within 0.01mm. Good enough for what we’re doing but obviously not as good as a set of actual ball mics.

These work great. They are stout. made from spring steel. If you break 'em you have been abusing them. Make sure you order the correct ones. Starrett mic's have different spindle diameters depending on the model. 5 tenths makes difference.
