The Mitutoyo 959143 data hold unit is used to hold the instrument reading, even after the jaws of the instrument are opened. It is designed for use with Mitutoyo Absolute series tools that have SPC capabilities including the absolute solar caliper, absolute digimatic caliper, absolute vernier caliper, absolute back-jaw centerline caliper, absolute snap caliper, absolute low-force caliper, absolute digimatic depth caliper, absolute digimatic depth gage, absolute tire thread depth gage, absolute digimatic scale units, and absolute tire, wheel, and brake calipers.
Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.

This unit plugs into the data output port on Mitutoyo calipers with SPC capabilities. I purchased this unit for a 500-171-20 Digimatic calipers. After inserting the module into the output port, pressing and releasing the orange button causes the display on the calipers to freeze and display an "H" in the lower left corner. The calipers can then be slid open or closed without affecting the displayed value. Pressing and releasing the orange button again returns the display to normal.This is useful for cases where you want to measure something but cannot see the display at the same time -- removing the calipers usually bumps the jaws so the reading is altered. A similar effect can be obtained by pressing the zero/abs button, and then closing the jaws, but the advantage of this module is that it freezes the display even in the "inc" mode.With the unit installed, the 500-171-20 still fits in its original case, so it does not need to be installed and removed every time.The only disadvantage of this module is that you cannot use the data cable at the same time.

Not usable with the calibers i have, and they say they are. Amazons filters are getting worse and worse

This was a gift and the person I bought it for said it didn't work with the calipers I bought to use it with. It said it was supposed to work, but didn't. He thinks it might be able to be used on another set of calipers, but as yet I don't know if he has tried it. The product itself is just fine and he likes it.
