I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good magnet and am definitely in that group. When I saw this switchable magnet tool pop up I knew I just had to have it because the only thing better than a magnet is a switchable magnet!I won't bore you to death with the physics behind this particular tool or electromagnetism. There are some good reasons for this, first and foremost, being that to truly understand magnetism you have to invoke Einstein and Relativity. Seriously. (Yeah, I'm a nerd and an engineer!) Anyway, the reason there needs to be a movable lever is because you are basically moving two magnets in relation to each other. By aligning or misaligning their respective fields you can entrance or reduce the effect. Cool stuff!When I took this out of the package my son took one look at it and asked if it was a weapon. I responded that I guessed that it could be used that way, but we were going to use it for the or noble and glorious purpose of picking stuff up. Now, this listing claims that it could pick up "up to 6.2 kg" which is 13.66 lbs for you Continental types. I don't know who made that calculation, but it doesn't seem to have involved a lot of testing - unless they were only using it to pick up other magnets. Don't get me wrong, it does have the ability to pick up some amount of weight, but I don't I think that quite in that weight class. I did play around with it and it will support its own weight when hanging from a metal shelf. Any more than that would get a little sketchy I think.For it's intended purpose, it will perform very nicely. I really love how easy it is to clean because instead of trying to wrest bits of metal away from it, you just simply pull the handle and let em rip! For picking up loose hardware and testing whether stuff from Amazon is actually stainless steel, that capability cannot be beat! I think this is a good value for the money, and I am happy to have it hanging around! (Hehe.)

Worked great on ferrous shavings. Put an inverted plastic bag on it and you can keep the gunk off and catch everything as it comes off. Don't expect the magnets to be super strong as they are really made for small pickup.

This is a very stout piece of kit. Most tool boxes have a magnetic pickup for small screws and bolts.This tool has a very strong magnet that will pickup many pounds. I didn't bother checking the weight because certain items it depends how and where you can attach it wether you can pick it up our not. Lets just say it has a very strong magnet that will pick most items in the 20 pound range.So if your in need of a magnetic pickup like this it will do the job.

Had some trouble figuring how best to use this tool, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite useful. If anything, it could be a bit longer, and the magnet could be a bit stronger, but it works ok as is, so no major complaints. Sure does make cleaning up after a task cxonsiderably faster. Don't have to hunt around on the floor/ground for those screws and nails/bolts anymore, just run this thing across the ground/floor, and it does all the work for you. Very nicely done.

I really like how this has made my clean up so much easier. After I do a bunch of drilling into metal, this does a great job of picking up the chips or shavings that come off. Then I simply pull the plunger and I can throw the pieces away.

This is a handy magnet to have. Not very long, about a foot. But the great thing about this one is the ability to self clean itself of all the metal stuck to it. Just extend it and it moves the magnet away from the end and the metal picked up falls off. Handy around a small machine shop or anywhere that has a lot of small metal items or scrap that needs to be moved. Spill a box or nails? Not problem. Wave this magnetic wand and it will pick them up and you can put them back in the container without touching them. Not very heavy, excellent quality, and it works. Good value.
