Product Description

Bish's Original Tear Mender Instant Fabric and Leather Adhesive utilizes a powerful formula, the quick drying adhesive instantly adheres to any material it can penetrate, forming a waterproof bond strong enough for use on work clothes, awnings, tents, boat covers, tarps, leather, convertible tops, and more. Features: water-proof, permanent, quick-dry, flexible, UV resistant and acid-free. Val "The Bish" Cismoski originally formulated Tear Mender in 1932. His nickname was a result of his imposing physical presence and his knack for having an answer to any and all questions which family members said reminded them of a Bishop. Tear Mender's impenetrable bond quickly made it a staple in the farm industry and was used to repair canvas drive belts for farm machinery. Today, Tear Mender continues to provide the same flexible, permanent bond and is widely used for a multitude of tasks from garment care to crafts. In 2015, Lighthouse for the Blind, a 501c3 non-profit, acquired the assets of Tear Mender to further grow their mission of providing employment for individuals who are blind. The Tear Mender product line is filled, packaged and shipped by employees who are visually impaired.

The more I use this product, the more I like it. I have used it to patch several pairs of jeans that were wearing thin, strengthen a buttonhole, give a button rivet some padding, and add a rug to the bottom of a dog bed where the dogs dug through the original bottom and pulled out all the stuffing. The product is just as described, liquid latex. Dab it on, let it penetrate the fabric pieces, and let it dry. The end result is a latex rubber bond that is durable and stretchable. In the dog bed, I used a whole bottle (probably overkill) to seal the rug completely to the sides of the dog bed. The dogs cannot get any purchase on the seam so they have been totally unable to rip it apart. And they have tried repeatedly. The jeans are equally as solid. The one problem I had with the jeans was that I did not allow the glue to dry thoroughly so it managed to penetrate both pieces of fabric as well as another piece where I had thought it dry and threw it against another pair of jeans. I can attest that the glue is every bit as strong as the jean material, and it will not pull apart no matter how much you try. The solution is to let the material dry for about a day to make sure it is 100% dry.I did find that the glue has a definite shelf life no matter how much you think you have closed it. I discovered this when I had not used the glue for a while then found something else that needed gluing. The glue had formed a rubber bladder inside the bottle which I was able to extract by gently pulling it away from the bottle. The inner pocket of glue was still liquid and usable. The bladder was just like a rubber balloon. Not sure how useful this feature will be, but it is there is you need it.This is a great product any time you need to glue two or more permeable objects together, it can also be used to turn a permeable object into an impermeable one by giving the material a light coat. It is durable and flexible and very easy to clean off fingers. I love it.

My cat tore a tiny bit into a leather padfolio, nothing terrible, not needing a patch, but I was worried the little tears would get worse, so I picked this up to try to fix it.It worked. It took a little doing and the first time I got confused and thought the white was the material under the leather coming through not the glue itself. In hindsight, that should have been obvious. But if you’re trying to repair something and running more on worry than logic, it’s good to know. It’s a bit slow drying. The bad of that is you need to leave it alone (away from cats) for a bit to let it fully dry. The good of that is you have ample time to reposition whatever you’re working with to get it exactly as you want it before it sets.I’m no good at this. I craft, but usually not with leather. This was easy to use and did a great job. I know I messed up and got glue where I didn’t want it. One dry it’s invisible and leaves no tacky texture. I’d planned on trying to clean the mess afterwards, only I can’t find it.Overall I’m thrilled with how easy it was and with what a great job it did.

I have used this on my son's wool tweed jacket, and on my husband's Spyder ski pants. Both garments had tears in the fabric, not on a seam, and presented challenged to "invisible" repair for me -- and I am a very GOOD seamstress. My son caught one of the vents of his sport coat getting out of a car, and tore a 3/4" horizontal rip in the fabric off the top of the vent. The Bish's made an all-but-invisible repair, assisted by the texture of the fabric. The ski pants were tougher, and the mend is visible, though not very. The fabric of the pants is a very lightweight neon green poly with a plasticized backing, and there was no way to stitch it because of the location (on the leg - close to a zipper for thigh venting and in an area in which Thinsulate was sewn into various layers for insulation). Iron-on patch would not stick to the plastic backing (I tried - twice!). The real problem was that the tear, if un-repaired, would "run" vertically down the entire front of the pant leg. I applied the Bish's, held the edges together for about five minutes (until I was sure they had stuck), and then let the pants sit for a half hour just to be sure. IT WORKED!There is a visible tan-colored line where the tear was, and the texture is slightly rubbery feeling there. (Bish's is latex.) Still the line is all of 1/16" wide, if that, and the tear has not extended one bit since it was fixed. It worked so well, I used the Bish's to hem the pants, as they were 1-1/2" too long for my husband, and my sewing machine would not work to sew through multiple layers of such heavy fabric. It wirked great for this, too. These were both fast, easy, and very inexpensive repairs on very pricey garments that would otherwise be ruined.

I liked the reviews and ordered it. And I decided to use it, over the weekend, to fix the strap of my left sandal which was a bit too loose ... I followed the simple instructions (mind you, I am a highly educated person to be able to follow any instructions :-)). I cut off the strap, applied this glue on both sides and presses together. I also applied it on a small leather and pressed it on the inside of the strap for an extra binding. I checked it the next day... when I pulled the strap it just came apart... Thinking that maybe I did not apply it properly, I removed the glue from the shoe (which was even easier than removing a cold chewing gum). And then I repeated my procedure for the second time. I wore it the next day to work... After one minute of walking, the shoe just came off my foot because the strap had come apart where it was glued. I had to walk back home carrying the shoe in my hand... Imagine this happening to a high-heel shoe -- one could even break an ankle in a situation like this... I was very upset and disappointed.Waste of money and time... It does not deserve a star at all.... The only good thing about the whole thing was that Amazon immediately refunded my money. Thank you, Amazon....
