This set of three 10" x 48" heated mats works very well on the three steps leading to our front door. They are ruggedly built with very solid connectors and the non-slip texture on the top of the rubber surface provides some extra traction. When hooked together the three mats draw 375 watts of power which is like running six 60 watt bulbs at the same time so I decided not to leave the mats running all the time during the winter because that would cost about $1.50 a day which is $10.50 a week. And if you kept the mats running throughout the 13 weeks of winter, that would cost over $130.00. So, I only turn them on when I need them which has been working out fine. They don't melt accumulated snow quickly. I tested them out initially by shoveling 4" of snow onto the mats to see how long it would take to melt the snow and it was several hours before the majority of the snow was melted. But, once the initial layer of snow has melted, it's very easy to shovel the rest off.One thing to keep in mind is that once melted, the top of the mats will have puddles of water (melted snow) on them and if you turn off the mats at this point, the puddles of water will freeze into ice. I made sure to sweep off the water before turning off the mats to keep them mostly clear of any ice.One installation tip I have is regarding the heavy duty waterproof connectors. When you push the two halves of the connector together you will not be able to fully push them together with your bare hands. You'll need some extra force to do it. I found that by placing the connectors between my knees, the extra leg force was enough to get the two halves to fully engage and seat tightly up against one another without the white rubber seal showing.

So first things first, the plug clamps were really difficult to secure. I actually wasn't able to get them together AND lock the clamp... So take that for what it's worth. I was able to use them but probably not to their most waterproof. I set this on the front porch prior to a snowstorm where we got ~4 inches of snow. It kept the spot clean and clear where it rested. I then moved it around and used it to melt the snow on the rest of the patio, and down some stairs. That didn't go as well. It took 3 days to melt the rest off, where it was mostly wanting to melt, then the water would sit and if I moved the mat the water would obviously freeze resulting in VERY slick spots. This size also wasn't very good to use on stairs and wanted to slide down the stairs. I had to put a brick on to hold it down and melt the snow on the stairs. It did work, ultimately, and probably cleared the steps faster than letting the sun hit them and melt the snow because my stairs face north and are often in the shade. However I just used a shovel to clear the bottom two stairs immediately after the snow and they were fine... so your mileage may vary. If I had the stair-specific mat, they likely would have worked much better. I think this worked great to put down BEFORE weather and keep clear that way. After, not so much.

Handy to have for the front porch area etc. Easy to set up and should hold up to weather and use.
