About this item

  • The ORIGINAL Hill Light Rosin, not an imitation!
  • For Violin, Viola and Cello
  • Wrapped in a padded velveteen shell
  • Slightly harder than the Hill Dark Rosin
  • Used by professionals worldwide

Hill Brand Light Rosin, considered by many as the ultimate rosin, is used by professionals worldwide. Hill rosins are wrapped in their own padded velveteen shell. This is the rosin that others strive to emulate. Well suited for violin, viola and cello. This light (amber) rosin is slightly harder than the dark (green) and grips abit less. This is genuine Hill Light Rosin, not an imitation!

This rosin is about the best rosin out there if you live in a wet climate. if you live in a dry climate and you want good tone they're dark rosin is quite good, it's not quite as good as Andrea but that's 20$ fora smaller case. In all, it's very good rosin for the price!

Disclaimer before we start here: Hill has another page on amazon with a darker-looking (medium) rosin in grey wrap also called "Hill The Original Light Rosin", which is the product I received, but having ordered from this page. I can't bring myself to dock a star for this though, because what I received was excellent. Now, bearing in mind the temperate climate I live in, this rosin produces a very smooth and mellow tone but with enough bite for fast attack. On balance, it is the most even-tempered that I've personally tried and doesn't hesitate or squeak at either extreme of pressure or speed. It also produces little to no dust. I've used it through the temperature and humidity fluctuations and it doesn't get tacky in wet or hot (or both) weather.Be warned though if you were looking for a grittier, "fiddley-er" light rosin, as I was, that this is not what I received. My order may have been a fluke. Also, for this rosin, you don't need a lot, so test every couple swipes to see where the sweet spot is.Don't bother with cheaper stuff. It's an extra five bucks and the difference in sound and clean-up is remarkable. Might try Andrea for giggles but this is now my go-to.

The rosin itself is probably the best that I've ever used. It comes in a small cloth to protect it. Now, my bow grips much better on the strings than before when I was using a cheap $2 rosin. One thing I didn't like about it is that it arrived in a yellow package that wasn't secured at all. My arrived a bit wrinkled as if it was melted and resolidified, but it still works well (the melting doesn't affect the effect of the rosin, but it doesn't look as good as perfectly shaped rosin) . However, that package isn't good enough and might cause it to arrive broken. Mine wasn't broken, just wrinkled.

In a pinch, can I use another? Sure, if I'm at a show and mine is lost or whatever...But lets be real, these things last forever, and you only really buy a new one when the old one gets lost or broken (or stolen!). I've bought 5+ cakes of this stuff over the past 20 years and some of those were $20+ at local luthier shops! Even when it was expensive, it was worth it. I thought I could skimp and use other similar looking stuff, but there's a difference I tell ya!I tell all my students to get exactly this brand, and the Light is easier to play imo than the dark for most cellists (most of my students, in the styles that I teach, at least!). I'm not sure how it feels to violinists compared to other rosins, but I describe this as "soft and forgiving" that there's a lack of bite, but in a good way. I can add bite with my arm, but if it's built into the icky sticky rosin, then it's almost impossible to take it out and play really smooth/warm notes.I play with Larsen soloist A/D strings, and Spirocore Tungsten G/C strings. I've also used this rosin with Jargar and Jargar Superior A/D, Obligato G/C, Eudoxa/Chorda gut strings (it was a little too light for that) and played on my students' instruments with Kaplan and other brands of strings, and it feels great on all of them. The "tone" of a guitar is said to be "in the fingers" but on a cello, the left hand gives intonation and vibrato, not tone. The tone comes from the right hand, or more specifically, the bow. The rosin is one of the most critical parts of the whole equation of tone, and Hill Light Rosin (from england) is exactly what fits the bill. These days I'm playing all carbon fiber. I have a CodaBow Classic (~15y old) and a Luis&Clark carbon cello. I also have a couple of wood instruments in the house, as well as an electric cello. Other than being allergic to pine, I have no reason to ever stop using this rosin. I could write a whole book on how much I love it! Actually recently tried Magic Rosin (synthetic) to avoid breathing problems from my allergic asthma, but it was just not the same. I'd rather sacrifice some breathing so that my cello can breathe better!

It is a great value for your dollar. The sound is super.

Like others said, the top isn't flat. It is more like an uneven, shallow cup. There was a section that was lower that could be used to draw the bow, so I scratched it down a little, with hardly an effort...

So far I like this light rosin. I have used Hill's dark rosin for several years on all of my fiddles and my Viola. I didn't know they made a light rosin. But I'm giving it a try. So far I like it.

It does not pull at all. Other people have stated that it's less powdery or that it doesn't scratch as much as their old rosins. That's not because it's of high quality but rather because the rosin is very hard. It doesn't want to adhere to by bow. I have tried to file it and scratch it with a key to get the smoothness out to be able to more easily get the rosin on to my bow but it remains very week. I got a very slight coloration (indicator that the rosin is working) after 10 minutes of messing around trying to get it to stick. And yes, this is the correct color rosin for my climate. I have some of my older rosin that I tried that did that trick immediately after trying to use this rosin. My old rosin adhered immediately and my bow because much lowder compared to when I used this rosin.
