This is the first kalimba I've ever played. The first thing I'd say is that this set is high quality and comes with some really nice touches. The construction feels sturdy. There is a little inlay in the wood near the bear's mouth that just looks beautiful. The case fits the kalimba tightly. It is light weight, but it doesn't feel flimsy at all. Finally it came with the tines tuned perfectly around a two octaves of C major. I haven't retuned it yet, but it comes with a tine hammer that you can use to adjust the length of a tine, thus changing the tuning. If you've never played a kalimba before, the tines are metal keys that you can play with your finger. There are a few holes that allow sound to leave the wood chamber that amplifies vibrations from the tines that you can use creatively to modulate the shape of the tone ringing out. The most interesting thing to me about the kalimba is the tuning. This kalimba comes tuned rooted around a C major diatonic scale with 2 full octaves expressed across the 17 tines. What is different from the white keys on a piano however are that the notes climb up in both directions from the lowest C which is the middle tine. Adjacent tines are either a chromatic step and a half or two steps apart. So to play a scale you need to alternate tines as you move out towards the edges. To play an arpeggio or major/minor triad, you simply play adjacent tines which are already arranged to form triads on one side of the instrument. However what's really cool about the kalimba is that using alternate hands, it is easy/natural to create suspended 2 and 4 chords from any root (this is harder, say, on the guitar). And that gives you a pretty unique way to create tension where you're otherwise limited because you don't have notes that fall outside of the diatonic scale.I have been sitting next to my 4 month old daughter over the past few nights just improvising on this instrument. She enjoys listening to me play it a lot. And it is a lot more fun for me than just playing her some music from the tablet. I am really surprised how much fun this turned out to be.

I was on the market for Kalimba for the last two weeks. I have researched a lot and ordered few I think are the potential Kalimbas I could own for the first time. I am a beginner but I have watched many videos about Kalimba and I know what I wanted. As a beginner, I wanted the notes engraved on the tines. I do not prefer the ones you have to put stickers on. I like the matte finish. I love the color and design of this Aklot Kalimba. It's chocolate brown. It is light, but it's genuine wood. The size is as big as the popular Gecko and exactly same shape too. I realized I don't need the ones with curvy sides. The case is one of the deciding factor. Compared to other cases, this one is premium. It really protects the Kalimba. I like too that the tuning hammer that is placed at the back doesn't scratch nor touch the Kalimba. The color of the bag is cool too. But the most important part is how it sounds. I tried recording simple songs and the sound is melodic. Unlike with other Kalimbas where you would hear some sharp sounds when you struck the tines, this one has a decent sound even though it says this is a beginner's Kalimba. I plan to bring this anywhere I go because it's very handy and I'll be able to learn and master new songs during vacant times. I ordered another one for my wife and I can't wait both of us playing together.

pros:-Have a cute and unit bear shape than other Kalimba.-The metal part have number and note carved on it already which I haven’t seen on any of my previous Kalimba.-The round shape make me feel very flexible when playing 2 notes at one side at a time. Since my hand is small, it’s really difficult for me to do that on my Gecko KalimbaCons:-The sound is alright, perfectly tune when arrive. However, it’s sound a bit rough and loud than my Gecko Kalimba. If I can only choose one I will choose that Gecko one because the unit sound of it and the design. If you are new to Kalimba and not sure if playing Kalimba is for you, I would recommend this product since it have a resonable price and it have good quality. It’s could be a good present for your families too. I think the kid would love to try it.

I bought the cute bear kalimba as my second one (first is a hollow, wood kalimba). I very much like kalimbas like my first one, but they are quite loud, to the point of worrying about waking up the kids if I practiced in the evening. Also the sound seems uncomfortable for my dog. After doing some research, I learned that the acrylic models were quieter. I admit I did not think I would buy an acrylic one at first, as I thought they were too fragile. But now after reading more and looking at a lot of videos on Youtube, I decided to go with the Aklot Bear, and oh my do I love it! It is so much quieter than my first one! It's like it's whispering. The sound is so soft and so clear. It was pretty out of tune, but easy to tune up with the provided hammer (which is also super cute!). No dead tines. Also, this one does not seam nearly as fragile as I originally thought. It is very well built. And I do love the rigid carrying case. Another point to make is that I do not find it very heavy. I had also read that acrylic models were much heavier and could hurt the wrists after playing it for a while. The weight is one of the reasons I chose this model, as it weighs less than other acrylic models I looked at. And I must say that it is very comfortable to play with. I love it so much I have been playing it non-stop all weekend and I do not feel any strain. So despite my thinking I would never go for an acrylic kalimba, I think this one is my favourite out of the two that I have. I am really happy with my purchase!

I recently purchased this Kalimba hoping for a quality instrument that was more than just a simple toy. I was rather pleased when I was able to find a solid wood (allows for better resonance than a laminate body) kalimba. When first unboxing the kalimba comes well packaged with when a protective case as well as a hammer (for tuning) and an instruction book on how to maintain and play. The keys are labelled distinctly and are polished nicely. There were no cosmetic defects on the instrument whatsoever. they also provide stickers for people learning how to play the instrument and want more distinct markings on the keys.Since I already am a musician, it wasn't too long before I was able to start playing music. In terms of sound, the instrument is very calming and mellow. The lower notes tend to ring a lot more while the higher notes do not have much sustain. I find it a bit harder to play the higher keys but due to the fact that the keys have to be a smaller size that is understandable. Just note that the resonance isn't equal. Higher notes ring for much less and have less tonality than the lower keys.Overall, I do think this instrument is great for anyone looking for a kalimba. It offers a high level of performance and sound while being a good price. The case included is very well made and feels quality. Compared to other brands listing their kalimbas at around $70-80 CAD for this same quality of kalimba, I suggest sticking with AKLOT. They are very easy people to deal with and were kind enough to send me maintenance tips after I received the item through e-e-mail.
