What is Kalimba?
The kalimba is an African musical instrument with a wooden soundboard and metal keys. The 15-key kalimba that we are making at Juma Instruments is an instrument that originates from African ethnic groups in Southern Africa. In the classification of musical instruments the kalimba is in the category of lamellophones or plucked idiophones (Hornbostel-Sachs system).
Kalimba is the names used for this 15-key African lamellophone. Other language varieties are Nyunga nyunga, Nyonga nyonga and Karimba. Karimba translates to “little wooden xylophone” and Nyunga nyunga translates to “something little that causes fun trouble”…
Variations of the kalimba are found all across Africa, for example in Zambia they play the Kankobela which has 7 to 12 keys. In Congo they play the Likembe which has 8 keys in pentatonic tuning.

It came with a lanyard, a chain, and a case for everything, perfect for bringing places. It was very easy to learn via a few youtube videos. It was finished nicely and it's not too loud so it can be played behind a door without bothering others. (Hence a perfect present for music loving kids)ðŸ˜It's small but was comfortable for me- I'm pretty petite and it didn't feel to big or too smallThe only thing I could note would be that it was not tuned- you will need a tuning hammer and a app to do this. The app is free and the tuning hammer is pretty cheap as well.

just a warning to everyone saying it doesn’t work properly this cute little instrument does arrive out of tune so you will need to either already own or buy a little hammer made for that purpose. very tedious process but once tuned the key tabs stay put and it has a very lovely calming sound. the only thing I wish it had were letters engraved on the key tabs either alongside or instead of the numbers so it’s easier to remember for beginners but still a great quality instrument for the price. really fun to learn songs on

Purchased this as a stocking stuffer for my 9 yo granddaughter and she really liked it. I must admit though I was disappointed in the size, which made or a less than sound and function.

For the grandsons. Looks good but quality sound is terrible. Hard to hold and play. Save your money unless you need junk to fill a stocking.

Got this for a gift for a friend who is a musician and likes to try other instruments out. She loves it and likes that it's easy to carry around and portable. The protective case is nice, and can fit in either a large pocket or bag easily w/out taking up much space.
